.223 Rem
So, Im thinking of, maybe, putting together an AR pistol out of spare parts I have, but will need a barrel. My question is, what is the minimum length needed to allow for complete complete burn? This is assuming 5.56/.223 ammo.
I have one in .223 with a 7" barrel.Just looking to have fun. But I still want reliable.
Interesting stuff.Complete burn changes with loads but for light sevice ammo the most bang x round can be produced in 21 inches with a gas gun. Take out 100-150fps for the gas gun vs bolt.
For match ammo with a bolt action one can go up to 24-25 inches before stsrting loosing speed although certain ammo or reloads can produce very high speeds with heavy bullets and slow powders up to 26".
The 223 is a very efficient ad accurate round given proper barrel lenght, rifling, etc....
It is not a pistol round obviously. Of the popular small calibers the 6.8 is the best round for a 10" pistol or the whisper for subsonic (marginal use). But also have some other great cat options courtesy of the thomson pistol style like the 6.5 and 7mm TCU using the same 223 parent casing.
Those are way more efficient than the tipical ar rounds due to the case volume to bore ratio.
Other than that, the thumpers are better but the best an actual pistol caliber.
The 9mm, 40 and 45 are the usual suspects for short barrels but for more power yet a great balance between straigh pistol and rifle you have the 357 SIG and the mighty 9x25 dillon that give you 357 magnum power and beyond in a convenient autoloader and also have a moder pistol to go with it.
You also have the tokarev but the 35 bore is so much better for this.
5.56 in a barrel 16" long is already a bit of a waste and anything less thsn 15-14" is absurd.
But if you like expensive fireworks then might be ok.
