AR Pistol - Too Late?

Two years ago I bought a striped lower and it has been sitting in my safe since. I just decided I would like to make it into a pistol. Since it has already been transferred to me, is it too late or can I still make it work somehow?

Federal law surpasses state.... (well it is supposed to at least, some states disagree).

Even if the ATF doesn't change anything, you can't turn a rifle into a pistol. If it wasn't transferred to you as a pistol you can't build it as one. I don't think you can change its classification either.

It was never a rifle. It was transferred to me as "other".

.223 doesn't have enough recoil to matter, I can still get a cheek weld to the buffer tube and that stabilizes it fine.

It would be a better with a proper length stock, but the brace with the super short LOP is just not any better for me than just the bare buffer tube.

I mean if you had something like an sba3 or sba4 on a regular Buffer then you'd realize the lop argument is still not valid

Most quality braces are adjustable and you’re able to change the length of pull on them just like a stock. Since you said that it would be better with a proper length stock, than you’re also saying that it would be better with a proper length brace.

Well, a brace (if used as advertised) has no need to be that long.

A decent adjustable stock that is just advertised as a brace for legal reasons would fall under my "proper length stock" comment.

Except the ruling hasn’t changed that it’s still legal to shoulder pistol braces. If it’s still legal to shoulder a pistol brace than whoever wants to, go for it. If you’re happier and believe to get the same results by holding a buffer tube by itself up against your cheek, than that’s cool too. Everyone is happy to do what they want.

But if you intend to shoulder it, then it's a stock regardless of what the actual legal distinction is.

My AR pistol is 5.56 and a 7.5" barrel, so it's an impractical toy anyway. I am not exactly looking to squeeze every bit of accuracy out of it.

Yeah 7.5” 5.56 is pretty useless relatively. As for the shouldering as long as you did it while it was “sporadic, incidental, or situational" and can justify one of those reasons, you’re good to go. Situational sounds pretty vague to me.

You’re right that a brace that you intend on using as a stock is technically illegal. A brace that you intend to use as a brace but are still legally allowed to shoulder based that it’s done in a “sporadic, incidental, or situational" manner is 100% legal. So there’s no downside and a good brace absolutely gives you more control over a bare buffer tube as long as it was used in the above mentioned ways. Having more options is better than less. With the uncountable amount of videos of people training or shooting AR pistols with braces installed while shouldering them, just goes to show that the law is so vague that they can’t do anything about people shouldering them. And statements like “Well, a brace (if used as advertised) has no need to be that long.” or to insist calling a brace a “stock” is more fuel added to the fire to help lawmakers attempt to take more freedoms away from law abiding citizens and their second amendment right.
