AR Stoner 18 inch SS fluted Barrel

AR-Stoner Barrel AR-15 223 Remington (Wylde) Medium Contour 1 8 Twist

I bought this barrel and have had a chance to install it and shoot it. This is what I have found.

First the barrel looks excellent, the SS is Bright and the flutes are crisp. It installed easily with a handguard from Shurluk Arms.
Last week:
The first outing was painful, the gun was short stroking, I switched lowers and it still short stroked. I shot factory loads, reloads and Milsurp all short stroked. I pulled the handguard and the gas block to check for allignment issues. There were none it had a perfect carbon ring around the gas port. I measured the gas port and it was .063 which for a mid length gas system is iffy at best. I put it into my drill press and opened the port to .078 figured that should do it.

This week:
I went to the range today to test it and make sure it was good to go. It shoots my 52 grain plinkers below 1 inch at 100 yards so far. I have only run 50 rounds through it so far which is not enough to see how well it will preform.

Bottom line:
Measure the gas port before you install it. If it is .063 use a 5/64" drill bit and open it up. You will be happy you did. IMO the barrel is worth the 139.99 dollar price tag.

Gas port too small

Bought this for a competition build. After trying with a adjustable gas block had to open all the way and rifle would not cycle. Changed buffer and spring no change and installed Odin Works non adjustable gas block. Long story short ended up re drilling gas port to .078 . Now it finally locks back and will cycle another round. Nice looking barrel just needs more gas to function properly .)))))

Yeah I read it before I bought it. There was only one review that mentioned the gas port being too small so I figured he must have got a lemon or he had too heavy of a buffer set up. With only one mention of the gas port I kind of took it with a grain of salt. The nice thing about having a gas port that is too small is it is easy to fix.

they are decent barrels. I have 3 I think. only one installed.
the Stoner are OEM barrels made by douglas I think so they are good for the money. One would think they have the gas port specs figured out by now.

I disagree. It came flawed. That means broken in my world.

Would you buy a new car that you have to replace the battery before you could drive it?

If they did not cut the gas port right, what else did they not build to spec?

They are plenty of barrels you can buy that are in spec and can be installed without mods. (Even in that price range)

You are correct that most people would consider it broke. The problem is once you shoot it nobody will take it back. So one will still need to measure the rgas port before they install it and return it before they install it. What are you going to tell the people who sold it to you? The gas port is too small? They may turn around and ask what you base your expert opinion on.

The gas port size may have been fine if I used a low mass carrier instead of a Full-auto carrier. It also may have been fine with a low weight buffer or different buffer spring. A gas port that is too small can be fixed without spending more money. A gas port that is too large has to be fixed by either adding an adjustable gas block, a heavier carrier or more weight/resistance to be buffer system. I will take a too small gas port any day over a too large one.

I disagree again. If you shoot it not does not work. Send it back as broken. No problem. Especially from midway. They wont even check it. I have sent barrels that wont work back with no issues.

A gas port too large has an easy fix......adjustable gas block. . No tools needs.

good to know about midway's return policy. The. Port size question we will just have to disagree on. If I could get all of my ports too small I would ( especially on Carbine gas systems). It would give me a chance to adjust it to the system I am building. The other option is wide open with an adjustable gas block.
