Ar10 build?

Hi,

So I was thinking maybe doing an ar10 build of some sort. Shooting for precision because it's either I embed my m1a stock or sell my m1a and put that money toward an ar10. I don't know what I could get for my m1a if I chose to sell it but basically it's an m1a standard with an arms #18 mount and a lucid l5 scope. I might keep the scope for use in the next build so I'm not sure.

Tldr; sell m1a and do an ar10 build or suck it up and get my m1a embedded and keep it indefinitely

The M1A will never be as accurate as an AR 308 can be in terms of small groups. You are not going to get the money you put into you M1A out of it. The gun market is soft right now and you would take a loss on your gun.

Here is another option:
Keep the M1A and build an AR 308.

You can also build the AR 308 in different cartridges that are more conducive to accuracy.
7mm-08, 6.5mm Creedmoor, 6mm Creedmoor, and so on.

M1A has a special status, because it's a civilian version of what was U.S. military service rifle. That's why it has a wide following, special dedicated matches and so on. AR10 is modern, simple gunsmithing, gives you more options and is a better shooter.

This probably won't happen then. I wont get a different caliber ar10 because I already have reloading dies for 308. I'm also not going to get an ar10 in 308 unless the m1a goes because then I'd have a redundant rifle

If you want a precision shooter you have a number of Ar15 calibers that will do the same of better as any other calibers in the larger AR.

The M1A if it is in good condition should sell well but might take longer to sell than when the firearms craze a few years back so
I would not be in a hurry.

If you are looking for precision also consider a bolt action repeater because it will simplify things a lot in terms of options you have for
precision work that includes much larger magazines for the best rounds and bullets one has.
That is why I proposed the AR15 because it might be more than enough but it all depends on what you want to do.

I normally start with a good bullet and then casing and everything built around that bullet. A trained shooter can be very effective with
a bolt action and score very well even at high rate of fire. One just have to train to do that if that is the main goal for a repeater.

Of course if you want more an accurate utilitarian the AR in 308 and other calibers is a very versatile platform.

The "bastardization" has no impact one way or another for accuracy use so do not worry other than cosmetics that is what the safe act does. There are some ergonomics restrictions but
nothing that cannot be fixed and again do not impact accuracy.

I don't want to derail your though process, I am just trying to give some perspective based on my experiences in the past.

IMO the most attractive feature of an auto-loader is easy reloading.
Once you remove that then you loose all original purpose for no good reason.
If other features are so important then I would go with a bolt action. In the end will be more accurate, more versatile and faster
than an auto-loader with a fixed magazine.

Just need to give more time to rapid technique.

Had the pleasure of shooting an AR-10 while down in Texas. With the right break you'll get some very manageable recoil (less than my NY compliant AK), at the cost of it being loud as all hell. We were at an indoor rifle range, and basically everyone on the range turned at looked at us after the first couple of rounds because of how much it shook the dividers due to the break.

Do the AR10, the M1s are nice guns but an AR10 is lighter and more accurate. If you have the equipment you can build an AR10 from individual parts and get exactly what you want for half the price of a M1a.
