AR15 Pinned Mag Kit Suggestions??

I just got this AR. Im currently at my vacation house in PA where the gun is perfectly legal. I want to bring it home to NY though. Ive been reading threads and seen all sorts of different suggestions but those threads are huge. Just want to know if anyone has come across a kit they could suggest that pins the mag but is relatively easy to remove again when I get back to PA and wanna shoot like a normal person.

Looks good, so do all the NYS options on pinned mags, but my two cents in NYS is just asking for trouble... REALLY SUCKS HERE...!!! I hate everything and pretty much everyone here !!!

Why not fix the magazine and then get another lower that you keep in PA that is not fixed?

The core of the law is based on the phrase "cannot accept a detachable magazine".

Easy. If you are familiar with how the magazine catch/release works, you'll know that the "button" is actually a square shaped nut. The L shaped thing it moves is actually a threaded screw.

The square-ish nut "button" is the exact size of the hole it pokes through. Replace it with a round / hex nut that is larger, and you'll discover it won't fit through that hole anymore. That means you cannot "push" it. That means the mag is no longer "detachable". You're now halfway there.

Next, we need to defeat the "accept" part of the clause. Make sure the "L" shaped part, that actually holds the mag, is rigid. If that is true, then the above nut means it CANNOT move out of the way when you try to install a detachable magazine. It will, by virtue of that nut being larger than the square-hole, not allow a detachable magazine to be "accepted". Assemble it without the mag, and prove it yourself - the mag will not go past the catch.

You will now have a rifle that cannot accept a detachable magazine. 100% NY legal, can be disassembled for service / malfunction, and can be reverted when out of state.

Suggestion - use a thin nylon, neoprene or rubber washer under the nut, to protect the finish of your lower.

That sounds like a pretty good idea. Definitely not gonna spend coin on separate receivers. Was considering the AR Maglock kit in case i want to play in NY as well but the option above is definitely cheaper.

Iv'e got a bullet button on one lower with the internal nut cranked all the way down. This locks the mag release in place, or would prevent the lower from accepting a magazine if it did not already have one permanently installed. Functionally identical to the T-Nut or hex nut solution, without anything externally visible.

That Prince50 MagLock is simply a long set screw you can get at a hardware store, where you can also get the correct drill bit and tap. No need to buy that when you can drill/tap your existing part. If you don't already have the drill and tap you may have a friend that already has them. Save a couple bucks.

Not during a malfunction. At least with the Prince 50, you can take an allen wrench to the button itself on the outside and turn the set screw to allow the mag release to be pressed of needed to clear a malfunction.

DD's lock is like a backwards mag release. The mag catch part is threaded. Insert the allen head bolt in through the button and screw on and off. Easy, takes about 5 seconds to remove in case of a jam.

For a fixed magazine, the [prince 50] definitely is the better option because if you have a malfunction at the range, you can temporarily turn it back to normal so that you can detach the magazine to safely clear the malfunction.

Don't forget to place a small piece of styrofoam before filling hole with some kind of epoxy

I still don't think epoxy over the hole would help any with a legal challenge. The only reason epoxy was used in sold rifles was to block the bullet button mechanism. I believe the two locking mechanisms above are legal but that's an opinion. Because you can install on a rifle and it only accepts a magazine in the locked configuration. It will either fall out or not go past the catch. To me these are by far the safest solution if you are looking for a fix magazine AR.

My understanding is that DD's Ranch had The State Police and someone from the state Attorney General's office in his shop to inspect the modification he uses to make these rifles SAFE act compliant and was given an official 'good to go' on it. The other modification, I have never read anything on. So what makes you fellows think these things would loose in a court of law.
The law abhors ambiguity and I truly believe that both would win in court. At the very least with a cumo activist type judge, these modifications would show a good faith effort to comply with the law and would be dismissed. Worst case would be a conviction and an appeal, which in just about any court of appeals, the law would be thrown out as unclear and ambiguous and the conviction would be overturned, but this is NYSSR so its is possible for the appeals court (the highest court in the state) to uphold the conviction, in which case its on to the supremes where the law of the land has become so politicized by the left that there is no guarantee there either. Of course the average Joe hasn't the resources to face such a blatant savaging of our constitutional rights, so what is a man to do? Frankly, I probably don't have enough years left in me to get a rendering from the supremes, so much for justice in America today.

I ended up buying the AR Maglock kit. It makes it so the mag cant be removed while the gun is assembled and cant accept a magazine unless the gun is disassembled. Cant be undone without disassembling rifle. Good enough for me. I like the ease of being able to remove mag without a tool though. Will put pics and let you guys know what i think after the install.

I bought this mag lock from eBay to try it out on a full featured build, meaning only a pistol grip. I am using a target crowned SS barrel and an Ace Skeleton fixed stock. The grip will be my only evil feature. I like this lock because the mag release button is longer and bottoms out on the inside of the receiver. After its installed you can insert the plastic plug with a little glue of your choice. With this mag lock, there is no way possible to push the mag release button to release the mag even with a tool weather the rifle is closed or open. This seems more like a "permanent" solution for having a fixed mag. If NY loses its dictator and ever becomes a free state or you move to a free state, all that's needed is a 1/8" drill bit to drill the plug out and no need to drill any metal part of the rifle.

In all reality until there is something in writing nothing can really be trusted as Safe Act compliant. It's all going to come down to the investigating LEO. Every work around I've seen claims it's compliant but I've also read of some Troopers saying not. Here in Troop C they test the button, simply if when they press the release and the mag doesn't fall out it's GTG. But if I drive into Tioga County it's anybody's guess.

DD's sells the lock with directions to epoxy it, and I know he will epoxy everything that he sells or transfers. This probably keeps the state police happy and off his back. I use his locks without epoxy as there is nothing in the law stating it needs it.

I don't show any of my guns to any cop I don't know and it's not all that difficult to make sure they don't have a probable cause to examine your guns even if you shoot on public ranges.
Yes, there is always a scenario where this can happen. The risks are low and it's not a catastrophe if it does. Using concealed carry gun in self-defense has much greater risk of getting into legal trouble even if justified. People still carry.
