I am not sticking up for this cop, but technically, him being fired was being appealed. He was never completely terminated.

The 75 million is the lawyers yet again. It will most likely settle for a couple hundred thousand after taxes. Meanwhile this clown shoots a guy with an ar (dust cover said “you’re fucked”). He said he would do it again at trial. Then he claims he can’t work anymore due to ptsd so he gets 30k a year tax free for life. No other job ( besides ceo’s) will fire you then make sure you get paid for life. Gross.

This was a weird case, not as clear cut as one side likes to make it out to be. The pension sure seems excessive. His firing was most likely appropriate. I do agree with his not guilty verdict though. The deceased made a movement that a reasonable person would interpret as reaching for a gun in that situation. I wouldn’t have shot him, but I can see many would. The dust cover of his rifle is irrelevant.

When officers got there, they ordered Shaver out of his room and to lie face-down in a hallway and refrain from making sudden movements — or risk being shot.

"Please do not shoot me," Shaver begged before he was ordered to crawl toward officers. As he inched forward, he reached toward the waistband of his shorts.

He was fired and the was a highly questionable shooting. He was the only cop that shot. The stupid dust cover is relevant. It shows he’s a putz they can’t follow sept policy. He also claims he can’t work now for medical reasons.

It’s against dept policy and swayed public opinion against the officer even more. It should
Play a factor in the determination to fire him. It’s a stupid thing to have on a dept use rifle (or any rifle in my opinion). It’s not a 1a issue because it’s work related.

Fair point to you and @ECU Pirates and I agree with that. I wasn't thinking things all the way through when I made my statement and it deserved a more thought out response. I kept thinking back to a situation where a private citizen had a pro 2A sticker on his vehicle when he was involved in a self-defense shooting and they tried to use it against him. A private citizen and active duty law enforcement are two different things.

I agree that non issued items like that don't belong on issued Firearms or uniforms. But I still don't think that should play a part in determining whether a crime was committed. Just like I wouldn't for a private citizen. I think they are two separate items. I get that bringing up the statement on the dust cover can show the mentality of this guy, but I still think it's a dangerous precedent to use something like that in determining guilt of a crime and Id rather not go down that road.

I agree that it was stupid to have on there, and even that it could be a factor in deciding department penalties. But something like that should never impact a criminal proceeding for anyone.

Right but if used for work which he’ll either be reimbursed for or be able to claim as a work related expense, political speech shouldn’t be on any of it.

It probably is, and departments should do better at enforcing the policies of such behavior. In general I think departments should discourage its officers from mimicking military soldiers. There are situations that surely require weapons and tactics that would seem "militaristic", but the average officer needs to be more "friendly/approachable", and the Seal Team 0 police officer that is all "tacticool" with a scowl on his face is only going to keep the divide between private citizens and leos growing.
