Police on patrol should always be in groups of two. While I have no love lost for the guy shot, it could have been prevented if in groups of two. I used to work in a psychiatric emergency room. There were times when I couldn’t handle the situation where having someone else there made all the difference.

Ideally,all cops should patrol in pairs.I am sure funding to pay for two cops in a car is a big problem,but I can also imagine the outrage from many people,even some people here, when someone gets pulled over by a trooper for speeding or such and 2 troopers exit the car.

Why would there be outrage? I’ve been stopped before by 2 in the city. One at the driver’s side and one at the passenger’s side outside my view. When talk about officer safety is brought up, this should be the most talked about topic.
As far as cost goes, it is what it is. There are many ways to supplement that. Reserve officers is one way. Instead of just having them for parades, let them ride along as backup. Also, having 2 on the scene lessens the chance of lawsuit when one has to use excessive force because he was alone.
There are many pluses to having reserve officers if going that route. Not only does the county save money, it helps keep officers honest since the ride along local citizen has no pension to lose and can let his displeasure known when shenanigans are going on.

It is ridiculous though that LEO's 9/10 conservatively speaking are unhealthy fatties and really in no position to continue to be in that line of work. When a 5 or 10 year old child has better endurance than a police officer, I feel like it's time to retire to a desk job. You can't always rely on a weapon 100% to save your ass.
Sometimes having the ability to run a mile or something without stopping and huffing and puffing like a boar hog during breeding season may be beneficial for the job.

This guy was clearly high on some sort of drugs as indicated by the taser not working.
I don’t see how the cop escalated the situation and I think he did a poor job defending himself. He likely had boots on as opposed to the perp with shoes. Use the boots. Kick at knees, shins, thighs, nuts. It’s amazing this cop and the observer made it out alive.
I think the cop was completely justified in shooting the perp.
I agree the citizen observer and passing cars should have helped. Another person in the fight would make all the difference. Remember that guy gets a hold of that cops gun the cops dead then the citizen observer is dead. I don’t think the cop landed one good hit on the guy. Likely the cop was caught off guard and out of shape.
mom glad the perp is dead after doing this because he’d have killed someone sooner or later.

If you are really concerned about officer safety you would end traffic stops all together. Mail them a ticket, if a red light camera can do it, surely an officer can.
Traffic stops are the most dangerous thing officers do, and they could be completely eliminated.
They won't do that though, because traffic stops are about warrantless searches and not enforcing traffic laws.
I am a huge fan of camera tickets. Most times they have been tried here in the US, the Courts have shot them down.
I will say though, most traffic stops are just that; traffic stops. Seriously, most cops do not go on these fishing trips that so many think.

I’ve been the victim of traffic cameras for speeding in NYC. They do work. I now begrudgingly drive 25 mph in a so called school zone at 8pm.
As far as most cops that aren’t fisherman, that may be true. But there are many that aren’t and that’s enough.

The local sherriffs around here are constantly bragging about all the drug arrests they make on the interstate, they all but admit that is the reason it is so heavily patrolled. If they pull you over for 75 in a 65 they don't care one bit about the speeding, they just want the chance to look in the window.
How do courts uphold red light cameras but overturn basically the same thing with an officer in the loop ? Maybe they need to change the law a little to make it work ?
Personally I think they could all but do away with police doing any traffic enforcement at all if they allowed people to upload video of violations to a web site and then mailed out the ticket. Essentially crowd sources enforcement.
There are plenty of people out there who would like nothing better than ruining someone else's day by getting them a ticket for some moving violation. You wouldn't even need to pay them, and things would be much more strictly enforced.

Yes, try not to be a fat out of shape piece a shit. Who has a better skill set other then drawing a gun. The guy clearly had a screw loose spouting some bullshit over a loud speaker and expecting a different result was in itself an escalation. Tell me would have it not been smarter to call for assistance before getting out of car?

Im not sure why he would have the need for assistance before he left his car. An officer is expected to do his job without Having Mr. helper come to rescue everytime he leaves his car.He would have observed that the suspect was under the influence of alcohol or drugs which doesn't mean hes going to go nuts . Ideally the officer would be in shape and well trained but for what ever reasons depts. don't spend enough time on that.
The officer appeared to be around 50 years old . That's to old for patrol in my opinion , unless they can qualify with a physical fitness program .
Ive always have been a proponent of mandatory self defense training for officers and bringing back the billy club or black jack. Personally , I never cared for the ASP. never used it , never would . too light, Always felt it was a piece of shit that would never bring down a football player sized man, I don't know what woman's supposed to do with it. The officer is left with the ASP , The taser, which may do nothing or kill somebody, and his sidearm its no wonder that officer shootings aren't more common. Give the officer proper self defense training and an effective weapon like a billyclub Tonfa or black jack and I guarantee it will be safer for the cop and the suspect. with the tinker toy weapons they have Im surprised there isn't more shootings, Hell, they took his weapons away they took his training away they gave him women for back up .
I feel the officer handled the situation fine except for the fact he was sent on patrol out of shape and un-trained in self defense.The outcome was very predicable. His life was in danger his fellow officers lives were in danger and the suspects life was needlessly endangered. The firearm should be your last resort not your only resort.
