I doubt this will change anyone's opinion, but the reality is that none of us own land. We rent it. Sure, we bought it and paid for it, but try skipping out on your property taxes for a few years and see how long you continue to own it. "Exclusive access and control so long as regular payments are made" = renting.

And that's not even getting into Eminent Domain and the rampant abuses found within.

I support keeping productive arable land in agricultural use. The 160 acre farm in Arkansas owned by a Chinese company bothers me slightly less than some developer getting a sweetheart deal to turn it into a casino or something.

China is a member of BRICS. That's lots of territory, but even other countries can take the same approach.

OK that’s their prerogative but for the most part China already does it and many countries have bid limits as well. Allowing foreign entities to just buy at will is suicidal

We can pass any laws we like, but there is a backlash when it is done in spiteful and controlling manner. In the end U.S. economy and International standing of U.S. dollar will lose out. Arbitrary use of sanctions and freezing of funds belonging to foreign governments already had an effect. The use of U.S. dollar as International currency was based on trust, which is no longer there.

Interesting you use the term spiteful? In that case maybe we should just mirror mother Russias or Chinese laws regarding the matter.

China is our enemy. Why should the US allow our enemy, its citizens or businesses, to buy real estate of any kind here? WTF, it's not complicated.

I don’t identify with eminent domain applying to me. That will never happen unless it works for me.

Neither Russia, nor China impose sanctions as punishment for our internal matters that don't concern them. Only U.S. and E.U. do that.
