Would full-power rifles still be the primary military arm if the STG had not existed?

Had the Third Reich not come out with the Sturmgewehr, would assault rifles be the primary military arm today? If the Germans had not fielded the STG, would we see the world armed with full power traditional battle rifles like the M1/M14, MAS 49, SVT 40, FN 49, etc. Whats are your thoughts?

I think the argument could be made that the M1 carbine set the trend, as it's design and production predates the StG44 and the Kalashnikov. Originally it was to be select fire, but went to production as semi-auto. Granted that is was a glorified pistol round, but if .223 had existed back then, it's likely the Mini-14 would never have been produced, as it would have existed in the M1.
Didnt Eugene Stoner experiment with a m1 carbine converted to a small bore, high velocity cartrige (I think it might have been .222 "rem fireball") only to have it catastrophically fail somewhere in the 50's?

I think someone somewhere would have experimented with intermediate rifle cartridges on military weapons.

" allegedly" klashinokv developed the ak independent of the stg44 so he may have just ended up being the first assault rifle
M.T.K. did develope the AK without plagiarism. By the logic of the "ak is really stg copy" crowd, you might as well argo that the m14 is a copy of the SVT.
Now definitely, the use of the stg was important in showing the Soviets that a weapon of the same class was needed, but the Kalshnikov and the Sturmgewehr are as different as apples and oranges.
Lets compare:
the stock-on the stg it is a necessary part of the desighn and accepts the spring and the rear of the bolt carrier as the weapon cycles. On the AK, the stock has no function on the firing components.

the locking action- the ak is a rotating bolt like the garand; the stg is a tilting bolt like the sks carbine and the bren/zb26 series of lmg's.

the mag retention system- the stg is a pushbuttom that interfaces with a square hole the mag, similar to an ar15/m16, but with right and left reversed. The ak is a rock in with front and rear retention lugs.

I don't think history would have changed much at all. The AK 47 would simply have gained t he additional accolation of being the first assault rifle. It was in development before Kalashinokov had any knowledge of the STG 44. As said above, this type of rifle had been under development by multiple parties, even before the war in some cases. Germany got their first.
I wonder though, if the war had ended a little earlier and the Soviets hadn't been under fire from the stg, if the Red army would have seen the use of a weapon like the ak as standard issue. We couldv'e seen the a history in which M. K.'s rifle was regejected by the authorities as a "poodle shooter" and him given the same greef as Stoner got, rigged tests, refusal to test the weapon, etc.
