Assembled my first lower

Magpul trigger guard

Next I’m going to add a magpul grip and stock. Im going to DDs ranch tomorrow to pick up a mag lock which will be utilized with a magpul pmag. I like how easily the baseplate can be removed. Also I’m really not to confident with the standard trigger and hammer pins so I’m going to swap those out for a set of kns pins. The trigger really does not feel too great to me but i need to finish and shoot it first before I can accurately comment on it. It may get swapped out later on for something a little nicer.

More than likely I will buy a complete upper. I don’t have the experience or tools to build an upper. Not yet anyways. Il probably get an Aero precision upper in FDE that will hopefully match a little. I’d like a .223 Wylde, 16” to 18” barrel, mid length gas system and an m lok handguard.

This will be mainly a range gun and frankly I just wanted to take a swing at putting my own rifle together. It was fun and pretty simple. I only shot the pivot pin detent across the room once. I can see why people have so many it’s addicting.

Let’s talk! Am I heading in the right direction as far as building a decent rifle? Any comments or recommendations?

Uppers are easier to build than lowers, but buying complete uppers is a good way to go. I like Aeros stuff too.

Nice work! I bought my first upper pre assembled as well. I would still invest in all the tools you would need to assemble an upper though, as you will end up needing them regardless. What twist rate on the barrel? I'm partial to 1:8.

I’d like a 1:7 or 1:8 twist rate either seems to be ok for a variety of ammo and distance but more than likely I will take what I can get. Every upper im interested is out of stock pretty much everywhere. And I will be buying tools here and there to eventually put an upper together.

Changed the grip for a Magpul one, added the Bullet Guy magazine locking button with a 10rd pmag and a Magpul carbine stock in FDE. @Bullet Guy called it with the variations in FDE color from part to part but I’ll live. As soon my chosen upper comes back into stock il be ready for another round of buying parts and then most importantly shooting it!

After some practice I found the lower to be easier, surprisingly. Sure there are more parts, but I could do it on a coffee table if I needed to. The upper 'needs' a torque wrench and vice. (the first upper I did, was without a torque wrench, later went back and double-checked it) The damn bolt-catch is probably the hardest part, but the last lower I assembled (Bullet Guy's) had the threaded version which made it sooo much easier. (same as the buffer tube detent - probably wrong part name, just woke up)

I have not done a head-space check, but probably should. I don't plan on building another one for a while, but I'd probably buy a completed upper the next time. I also want to replace the handguard on my first rifle.. it was a cheap Chinesium handguard (I know, I know.. funds were tight at the time) and I'm not happy with it.

Buy a barrel with barrel extension installed and don't worry about headspacing. That's how they are usually sold.

That is one nice thing about the kns pins. They hammer right in behind (and knock out) the old pins.

Il post some pics when I get home Friday. Any one know of anything interesting to see or do in Port Allegany PA ? So far it seems like a blue collar country town.
