Assembly Announces Passage of Bill Recognizing Lunar New Year as a Public School Holiday​

Speaker Carl Heastie, Assemblymember William Colton, Asian Pacific American Task Force Co-Chairs Grace Lee and Zohran K. Mamdani, and Asian Pacific American Task Force co-creator Ron Kim announced today the passage of legislation requiring public schools statewide to close on Lunar New Year, allowing hundreds of thousands of students and staff the day to celebrate with their families (A.7768, Colton).

“I’m proud New York State is providing the time needed for students and their families to honor and celebrate Lunar New Year,” said Speaker Heastie. “New York has the second largest Asian population in the country, and it’s time we provide them with the time others are given to celebrate and spend time with family.”

For schools, there should be a couple of floating holidays so that each school can close for holidays that are specific to the majority culture in their community. I know there has to be a set number of days of education, so this would give the variability needed to ensure all students get the same number of days while also meeting the cultural or religious needs of their specific student body.

I did this (carefully/very 'PC') with my team. Working holidays was required, except any that were "particularly meaningful" to someone, and any holiday worked - they were payed OT and given a FH. Most of them could handle this unofficial policy without issue. Others found all days that end in 'Y' particularly meaningful. The company canceled Easter as a paid holiday so Juneteenth could be added. Productivity actually increased that day.

We should be forced to celebrate 'Exit 22 Day'. That honors the day my GPS told me I should have gotten off at exit 21. USPS can put it on a stamp, and the mint can make some coins.

I would also propose January 6th as a holiday, along with 'Killdozer Day'.
