Gov. Cuomo is playing hardball as he tries to ram through his $178.8 billion budget proposal — by threatening to block planned pay raises for legislators if they don’t knuckle under, sources told The Post.
Negotiations over revenue projections for the 2019-’20 fiscal year broke down Saturday, and Albany lawmakers fear that Cuomo won’t sign the budget by an April 1 deadline if he doesn’t get his way, sources said.
That would prevent state senators and assembly members from getting a $10,000-a-year salary increase — to $120,000 annually — that’s tied to on-time adoption of the state’s spending plan.
Assemblyman Gary Pretlow (D-Mount Vernon) on Sunday accused the governor of using the raises as leverage to get his way.
“It’s extortion,” Pretlow told The Post.
