Questions:

1) Who decides whether you're mentally competent?

2) Does life insurance pay out on "assisted suicide"?

Always been of 2-minds on this - would I want the choice if I had Stage 4 pancreatic cancer and the chance of remission was essentially "0"? Depending on where you look, it's a 5-year survival rate of 1-3%.

But, there's just too much chance of abuse by both greedy relatives and, more pointedly, the "gubmint".

Agreed. We didn't quite get there with my father, but it was close. However, I see what's going on north of the border in Canada and it gives me pause. When there's no hope of recovery and the individual consents to it I'm all about allowing folks the choice to check-out on their own terms. I really don't think God would consider that a sin in those circumstances.

As @OwnTheRide said, we take better care of our pets than we do our elderly.

Good point above with life insurance paying out or not. This is a love affair with the health care companies to make it cheaper for them.
Now I have a question for the masses. Does the democrats value life or choice but it seems they value neither. I get people being able to request this on their death bed but it won’t stop here. This is just the beginning and will be expanded. Democrats want genocide except those useful and agreeing with them

I get the need for some sort of compassionate relief, but the involvement of the NYS government is a massive red flag.

That’s where this gets hard. I feel for you both and what you went through. I saw it with my grandpa and it was tough. He was a good man and it was hard to see him suffer.
I just don’t trust this will be used for good and will go further.

Agreed, we just went through this last month. It took 10 days for him to pass, and going to see him in those last few days was extremely difficult because you don't want to remember him that way.

And I said the exact same thing to my closest friends about our dogs being given more dignity when it was their time.

While generally opposed to "assisted suicide" because of the propensity and possibility for abuse, I too have endured the Death Watch of someone actively dying no less than six times, and while Hospice will tell you they're aren't suffering, I wholeheartedly disagree.
I never put a Human Life in comparison to that of an animal needing euthanizing (been there for that too) however the argument IS valid.
Sad part is the State having it's dirty dick stuck in it along with that smug cunt whose ambitions exceeded her intellect.

There is no good way to think about this. My mother in law was forced to subsist for a week with constant morphine injections until she passed away. Yet any deep dive into "dying with dignity " shows there is a very real rush to declare people dead so their organs can be used. There simply is no one size fits all answer, which makes public policy extraordinarily difficult. Every time I lean towards the pro assisted suicide camp I read another horror story about someone rushed to a decreased state so their organs can be utilized. I am very very ambivalent about the topic.

This ^ is why my Father (who was a Medical Doctor) told us NOT to sign that Organ Donor on our Drivers Licenses: there's big money hidden in those tissues and you might well be declared beyond help as an excuse to harvest when it just isn't so.

It's funny to me people are squeemish about assisted suicide, yet doctors literally have poisoned my mother with reckless abandoned on chemo to the point she is in hospice, 70lbs, and no longer can walk. That's not help, that's basically a slow murder in the name of profit.

The medical community fails to think of the interest of the patient in the pursuit of their specialty fees every day.

I say give the patient the choice to opt out of a slow murder.
