you do predictions in many ways.
Ammo? Manufacturing and Sales. The same they use in manufacturing planning and S&OP (Sales and Operations Planning Estimates) to
calculate manufacturing planning and demand and what type of demand.
The ATFs estimates are probably pretty accurate.

on the Ammo .. yea would be on manufacturing / sales .. they have no clue what the public has .. maybe the info on all the rounds IRS and other ABC agencies bought ..
All right guys, we're doing ok, but I know we can do better.
They cannot account for all of the 80% receivers that are being made into functioning guns everyday.
I would add another 1.2 million just to account for those.

Oh! ...well, even guesses should have some foundation or baseline. I would be surprised those many people have the time and or means but I have no clue nor reference to make any kind of guess.
The majority of shooters dont even know how to properly install a scope and rings let alone getting into fabrication tasks.
Which is why I chose 1% of reported gun owners. I know several people that have made 80% receivers into working firearms. I am only 1/100,000,000 and I know 8 people that make/have made there own guns, 1.2 million guns made from 80% receivers is a plausible number Just based upon my sample size.
So let’s say I know 50 gun owners and 9 (including me) have made their own guns. 9/50 = 18% of the gun owner I know. 18% of reported gun owners = 18 million people that may make their own guns. Out of those that could make their own guns let’s say 7% actually make one. That = 1.2 million. This doesn’t account for guys that just like to build guns and will make 20 or more just because they can.
it is all speculation but 1.2 million is an estimate based upon my small sample size.

I posted this around the time Hitlery was losing. That more than 10,000 confiscations per day would need to be performed for every day of her presidency. An impossible feat, every for the most adoring progressive! If 10 LE personnel were used for each, well... Just add the numbers. Then tie up the courts with all the processing and the entire system collapses under the weight! Is why it would have to be "voluntary" program, lol.
As for ammo, I believe the article noted the manufacturing infomation being used to estimate the number of rounds.
As for firearms, it's a guess, real crapshoot because they're only using numbers from 98' onward. Guess there were no guns before then, lol. Even Bloombucks couldn't afford a national buyback program if he funded it himself.

I agree, I think there are more than 500M guns in America, and could easily be more than 600M. I know guys with 20 rifles and 15+ hand guns. I know a couple guys with over 50 guns. The ATF never includes all the guns made a kept from the 1950's+.
actually, now that I think about it, I don't know anyone with less than 5 guns, of course, almost every single one of my friends is either hunter or competition shooter
and as far as ammo? they never include reloaders. LOL, that number would soar pass 12 Billion.

At least half of my collection are hand-me-downs and existed long before records were kept! I assume the same relates to most who have any kind of quantity in their collections!
