The first "assault rifle" was probably the Stg44 - Sturmgewehr 44 - the translation is "assault rifle". The AK and M-16 are assault rifles. The following Wiki link appears to be accurate.

The STG44 is considered the first successful, there was one attempt (Finland I believe but cant remember off had, there is a video on the STG 44 on forgotten weapons and Ian mentions the "first first") but it was not mass produced or really made it out of the prototype/concept phase if I remember correctly

"Assault rifle" is a real thing. It has been defined by the military as a rifle with an intermediate grade caliber that has the option to select automatic and semiautomatic fire.
"Assault weapon" is a political construct aimed at intentionally mischaracterizing semiautomatic rifles based on cosmetic features that do not alter or affect the firearm's caliber or firing rate.

Can spell it out. Liberals use the terms interchangably, which implies they use it incorrectly given the sentence immediately preceding it, and the word "but" in the 2nd sentence.
