I think this article is very sensationalistic and one-sided. As I read the article, ATF identified individuals based on suspicious gun buying (and in one case resale) patterns and then examined other information like financial records to further investigate. That then raised a legitimate question as to why and how people with no reported income were buying multiple firearms.

Yes its possible that some of these people are criminals, given the system of laws on the books.

The point still stands that this is warrantless surveillance and tracking, and a deprivation of Rights.

If there is a crime, law enforcement is required by law to get a warrant based on probable cause from a judge. Almost none of the examples mentioned in the article are exigent crimes. ATF and FBI are clearly rifling through "persons, houses, papers, and effects" without a warrant.

If they have probably cause, then they are mandated to seek a warrant from a judge to go through a person's private life and property. They are not doing that. They ARE denying people their Rights, including the Right of Due Process and Equal Protection, under the law, prior to bringing a criminal case.

"No Guns For You" without a warrant, an arrest, legal counsel, trial, and a conviction is not how this game works.

Ideally yes, but law enforcement routinely accesses records for credit cards, cell phones, banking, etc. without a warrant. Almost none of the providers of such take a stand and require a warrant, instead choosing to simply comply with legitimate requests from law enforcement.

I would 100% support a system that requires law enforcement to have probable cause and obtain a warrant before engaging in these requests.
