My wife, son and I attended the above program last Saturday put on by my gun range c/o the West Seneca Police Department. I have the following observations and conclusions:
- Doing nothing is not an option.
- When the SHTF there will be casualties; the intent is to reduce casualties. Life isn't perfect.
- You can be injured and still mount a counter attack, time is not on your side you have to react.
- The LEO indicated that an armed citizen offered a potential good defensive response, however the defender needs to know when to go neutral when the police arrive or become a casualty themselves. When the police show up they have no idea who you are. This applies not only in public spaces but in your house.
- Situational awareness; know your exits and alternate exits. Guns are nice but avoiding a fight will get you better mileage. Knowing how to GTFO is an important tool to have.
- Adrenaline gives you funnel vision. You lose sight of your options. Planning and thinking ahead should be a constant on-going exercise in your mind. If you run these drills in your head, auto may just save your life. Put yourself in the mindset of being able to walk into a completely new space and planning multiple egress paths.
- The program didn't only apply to an active attacker but also showed how people failed when fire broke out and people's lack of situational awareness and planning. (Night club fires.)
- You don't have to be an EMT-doctor to render assistance, a little basic first aid training should be something everyone should have.
- My place of work is grossly under prepared.
