Audio of Mike Bloomberg's 2015 speech at the Aspen Institute has gone viral. In his talk, the former New York Mayor who's now running for the Democrat presidential nomination, says that "you can just Xerox (copy)" the description of the murderers and their victims (male, minorities, ages 16-25) and hand it over to the cops. As is always the case with Bloomberg, he had the video of the speech blocked. Sadly for him, however, there are people who have the audio recording.

"95 percent of your murders -- murderers and murder victims fit one M.O. You can just take the description, Xerox it and pass out to all the cops. They are male, minorities, sixteen to twenty-five. That's true in New York, that's true in virtually every city," Bloomberg said.


"And that's where the real crime is," the man who's running for the nomination of the supposedly anti-racist Democrat party went on to say. "You've got to get the guns out of the hands of the people that are getting killed. You want to spend the money on a lot of cops on the streets." Once you've got more cops, he argued, you have to "put the cops where the crime is, which means in minority neighborhoods."

But to your point none of that will help his campaign. And it's not like he said it 30 years ago, it was just a few years ago. He can't realistically pretend he's changed his opinion.

I saw a video yesterday of him talking about how ridiculous it is for men in dresses to be in girls' bathrooms, too. He's not nearly woke enough for the extremist nutters in the party (gun views notwithstanding).

One of the biggest changes that Bloomberg made to New York City gun laws as mayor was to treat unlicensed possession of a handgun as a felony offense. That change was ultimately applied statewide as part of the SAFE Act package of gun control laws approved by New York lawmakers in 2013, and since then, the vast majority of SAFE Act charges have come from just two boroughs of New York City; The Bronx and Brooklyn. As Slate‘s Emily Bazelon reported last year, the vast majority of those cases are possessory charges being brought against young black men with no serious criminal history.

over many months of my reporting, I found hundreds of teenagers and young people, almost all of them black, being marched to prison not for firing a gun, or even pointing one, but for having one. Many of them had minimal criminal records. To be precise, when I went through 200 case files, I found that 70 percent of the defendants in gun court had no previous felony convictions.
Here’s what predicted who ended up on the benches in gun court: race and age. Black people are less likely to own guns than white people, but the defendants in gun court were almost all black teenagers and young men. An initiative that sounded like a targeted attack on America’s gun problem looked up close more like stop-and-frisk or the war on drugs—one more way to round up young black men. Reviewing my book in the New Yorker, Adam Gopnik suggested that a kid locked up for a drug offense would have made a more representative subject. But drug charges are the old way of shunting people to prison. Gun possession, and similar offenses that states treat as violent, is the new way. And the 20-year-old whose case I followed wasn’t “the wrong kid” from the point of view of the system or the politicians that built it. His case was typical in gun court, because he was exactly the kind of person the mayor’s plan was designed to ensnare.

Actually its almost exactly right.

"The statistics, which cover crime in 2012 through the end of June, show that 96 percent of all shooting victims and 97 percent of all shooting suspects in the city were black or Latino. The report also shows that more than 90 percent of New Yorkers stopped and frisked so far in 2012 were black and Latino."

I belive the nationwide statistic for violent crimes are committed by minorities is more than 90% of the cases.

People keep mistaking a cultural problem for a racial one, just because there is a high correlation between culture and race in that instance.

People also mistake discrimination against a terrible culture for racism because of that correlation.

Yeah I knew it wasn't grossly far off. All I need to do is go to whec.com every day to see that pretty much every damn murder happens within a few square miles, and it's not suburbanites or farmers killing each other.

Full disclosure she admits at the end of this she is friends with Mike, but when i first heard mike was running i was concerned and remain so. Published yesterday on WSJ, but no paywall on her site.

Bloomberg's comments about blacks seem to have resulted in no backlash (he's a democrat, so who is shocked really). He's taken support from Biden.

We'll know more on Super tuesday. I think peggy's comments about trump's view on bloomberg may not be far off the mark. I also disagree with attacks on his height. This country is full of short people. It's not their fault. Neither is being dumb, but insulting a person's intelligence is still seen as a legitimate insult. I think trump needs a new insult than mini mike.

The good news is the rabid sanders supporters hate people like bloomberg. He is obscenely rich and he is clearly just going to try and buy the nomination.
