I've heard that you can take the Pennsylvania safety course online and NY will accept it. The NY resident license isn't that expensive (something like $50 including doe tags). Shoot one deer and process it yourself and it's probably would pay for itself. You just have to figure out if the wife and kid(s) like to eat it.

This trip was pretty reasonably priced. I think all-in I was about $2k. Gas, food, supplies, camping gear, tag, and other odds and ends. I'm looking to spend $1500 next time, and that should be easily doable. I'll bet if you could find 4 people to go, you could get the cost to about $1000 each.

Yup. I'll keep better track of my costs next time, but it was about $2000 this time. I had a lot of the stuff that is needed though. I had a nice backpack, sleep system, truck, binoculars, jetboil, gun, etc.
I had to buy about
$90 binocular harness
$150 in coolers (which will get used for other things)
$65 in game bags to put the meat in
~$500 in gas (We put about 4k miles on my truck this trip)
$630 for the elk tag
$70 in bullets
$? food
$50 oil change for driving so many miles
I'm sure there was more
Next time it's just tag, gas, and food. We ended up camping right next to the truck. We planned on hiking in, so we took freeze dried meals. We could have eaten way better by bringing a propane grill and "real" food like hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, etc. Oh well, live and learn. I'm going to try and go back in 3 years.

Yeah, having the camping gear ahead of time helped. Granted, I bought my tent this year and a new pair of boots, but I didn't spend more than those. I think it was $150 for the tent (on sale from $200) and $150 for the boots, but I would have bought those anyways.
Next time we go I'll either buy another sleeping bag or something to lower it's weather ability and better hunting clothes. I'm glad I didn't buy them for this, because I don't like to waste money if I didn't wear them again, but I can definitely see myself going out. Maybe won't spend the scratch you did on some of that stuff, but I'll get there. Definitely will want something for my ass and for the wind next time

At least we know I don't need a new bag, bigger in size at least. Maybe just something because this is getting old and I broke a clip on it, but I think the size was alright.
The 30°F rating on the bag is right on the edge, and we like to go camping in colder weather. I also don't like sleeping with 3 layers on. That's not comfortable.

Yeah, I'd suggest a 20° bag, or maybe even a little lower. If we hike in next time, it may get a couple degrees colder. Also, it was a little warmer than an average year by maybe 5 degrees. You can end up like me with 3 backpacks, a couple sleeping bags (that I never use), and a whole slew of extra gear.

Try a wool liner. I use a 30 degree rated bag but carry a wool liner for when it gets really cold. The worst is sweating inside of your bag. Have had my bag close to 25 years. Not meant as a back packing bag. When I back pack I use a light weight down filled bag.

back in boy scout on a week long winter camp .. a good foot or 2 of NY snow back then .. we learned .. froze our butts off the first night ..

So this thread inspired me to start my serious research for next year. My friend sent me the zones we'd be hunting and we started talking tactics. We won'tbe camping as he literally lives in the middle of nowhere and we'll be hunting within miles of his house.
Looks like the license is $154 and the tags for mulies are over the counter and $300. He's gonna put in for the elk draw and let us use his tag which apparently is legal as long as we all have hunting licenses.

I'd definitely like to go back, even if it was for mule deer. I wanna get into hunting more. It suits my camping habit anyways.
Moving out there would be nice. I'd love a nice house out there in the woods, a few acres, and nobody to bother me. As long as I had plenty to keep myself entertained.

Little over an hour southeast of Montrose. Unit 65, Uncompahgre National Forest. 1st rifle tags are given out by a draw, but they're pretty much a guaranteed draw.

25% (2015 number) success rate isn't really that bad, especially considering the large number of non-resident tags given out.
I hope to do Colorado in 2018 also. Maybe we can do a NYGF hunt.
