Hello ... born and raised in WNY, left for the service and now back and living in CNY. I'm no stranger to guns (big and small), but I had to let them go because all of them were not NYS compliant. Now I have the task of rebuilding my collection, could be fun, definitely thinking that it will leave me very frustrated.

I've searched the internet, but don't see any real reference in regards for what is required to purchase a rifle or shotgun. Is it as simple as filling out a form for NYSP and the ATF plus the background check? Not really sure what to expect when I walk into a LGS.

Long guns are just form 4473 (ATF).

Fill out the 4473 at LGS, They will do the NICS. Leave with your purchase.
Do you have NY ID? Might be an issue if your Drivers Licence is from out of state.

Be aware, the gun racks have been picked clean. Basic pump shotguns like a Rem 870 or Moss 500 are probably out of stock.
Ammo can be tricky as well.

Congrats on the return. If I may offer some advice on how to start building up your collection again in NY. The best way to do it is to take the money for your desired guns, save it and move the hell out of NY. The rest is pretty standard.

To be up front, I am moving from Virginia. The politics are mirroring those of NYS. I'll give it a few more years before it'll be just as bad if not worse.
