Background check question - NYS

I enjoy target shooting and shooting clays and recently tried to buy a shotgun. My background check failed; no reason provided.

The store provided a form with a phone number to appeal. The phone number was fake. I went online, the phone number also brought me to a changed[or]fake phone number...

Does anyone know of typical reasons shotgun sales are denied in NYS? Is there a process I missed (such as fingerprinting, etc.)?

Any information would be helpful. Appreciate serious responses... thanks.

The gun seller gave you an NTN number, do not lose the number.
Call 1-800-FBI-NICS to get an appeal packet
Then plan on waiting 2 plus years.
They are processing appeals from Aug 2015 right now.
A buddy is going through it.

Deny= felony. Domestic violence. Simple mix up.

Google 4473 deny and call the number. Do you have your NTN number?

Even if its a mistake, you will wait the 2 plus years.
Within 5 days of sending your appeal in they will send you a reason for denial. Then you have to wait.

No felonies or violence etc... Do you need a hunting course or anything? I've had safety courses but I'm not sure if those would show up...

Already used my SS. Every shop goes through the system background system, is there a reason you think a diff. shop would have a diff. outcome?

Think it could be my middle name -> I typically use my initial for that, but the computer prompted for "full legal middle name" so that is what i entered..but, that is *not* on my license, just the intiial is. [the reason i suggest this is I know of someone that recently had this issue with a D.H.S. background]

Could be that very easy, or things ya don't remember as a kid if ever arrested?

My friends was because of a NYS "serious offense".
30 years ago he got a 4th degree criminal possession of a weapon.
It was not a violent offense because he did not plan on using it on anyone. It was a "switchblade" he used for bullhead fishing. He did not know it was illegal.
$100 fine, no probation.
He got a Certificate Of Relief and now can buy guns.

Well considering that charge/issue would be far beyond what i would expect, hopefully my issue will be resolved. Understable, just annoying. Thanks for your input guys.

A guy I work with gets 'Delayed" pretty much every purchase he makes. He collects so he does buy often.
He got the UPIN, didn't help.
He also has a NY Pistol Permit .

Now he plans on having to go back to the FFL a few days later to pick up his purchase. Sucks when its a 3hr drive , one way.
