Auto's are not illegal. You can use them while fishing and hunting provided you have the fishing or hunting license...read line 6
265.20 Exemptions
a. Sections 265.01, ... 265.10, ... 265.15, ... shall not apply to:
1. Possession of any of the weapons, instruments, appliances or substances specified in sections 265.01 ... by the following:
(a) Persons in the military service of the state of New York when duly authorized by regulations issued by the adjutant general to possess the same.
(b) Police officers as defined in subdivision thirty-four of section 1.20 of the criminal procedure law.
(c) Peace officers as defined by section 2.10 of the criminal procedure law.
(d) Persons in the military or other service of the United States, in pursuit of official duty or when duly authorized by federal law, regulation or order to possess the same.
(e) Persons employed in fulfilling defense contracts with the government of the United States or agencies thereof when possession of the same is necessary for manufacture, transport, installation and testing under the requirements of such contract.
(f) A person voluntarily surrendering such weapon ... [to the police].
2. Possession of a ... switchblade knife ... by [certain prison/corrections personnel on the job].

kniferights.org has a couple pages dedicated to this on their site, but assisted opening knives are still regarded as switchblades throughout NY state. NYC still limits blade length to under 4" - and "must be completely concealed", = 'no visible pocket clip'. It's a wonder they don't limit New York residents to just using spoons for eating utensils!

Sure. New York had no law against butterfly knives/balisongs to begin with, so they were already legal. But some of them got swept up as "gravity knives". They aren't, because a gravity knife is defined to "lock into place" and a butterfly knife normally doesn't do that. There were still people who got arrested and jailed for that and some only got overturned on appeal.
Also as others have pointed out gravity knives and switchblades were already legal while actually hunting pursuant to a valid hunting license. So that stays the same for switchblades.
The classic German gravity knife is one where you'd push a button and point the knife down and the blade falls out of the handle and locks into place.
More conventionally it's just a locking folding knife with a release button on the handle and a loose hinge/spring such that you easily flip it open and locked with a one-handed flick of the wrist.
The issue was that NYPD (and basically only NYPD and NYC-adjacent law-enforcement, although it's a state law) was going after people for having ordinary folding knives that were never designed as "gravity knives" that they could possibly flipped open via many strenuous and absurd arm motions, then charging it as a crime.

Stabbing someone is illegal regardless. Law enforcement's job is to be concerned with the people slashing other people, not the knives themselves which people have a right to carry.
Also, I really doubt it was "wide spread opposition." There's opposition from the traitors that run the city, but I doubt regular LEOs really think knives are the top priority that the force should be worried about down there.

Upstate cops never enforced "gravity knife" laws to begin with.

That was based on a court of appeals decision last year that upheld a conviction based on a knife found on a guy riding on the subway. The majority opinion had no explanation for why it met the statutory definition.

So I think that's still pretty far from saying it's settled state-wide. There's a binding statewide precedent (although how binding a decision that doesn't discuss the facts or the issue at all, is rather questionable), but I still don't think anyone upstate is getting charged for assisted-openers. I wouldn't worry unless you're planning on riding the subway.
