Barrel change help

I never did a barrel change on any weapon, I was watching videos which say that the torque has to be just right .So I was a little skeptical in doing it. Is it pretty simple? I don't want to spend a hundred bucks for tools if I could just have a smith just swap it out either. so Im looking for any recommendations on changing the barrel or smiths in WNY that could do it . Heil CUOMO!

What type of weapon. AR? Bolt gun? Savage? Doing more than one.

I guess if you have to ask, have a gun smith do it.

Torque has to be enough (35 lb ft or more), there is no magic number.

If you have a large vise mounted on a solid bench and can spend about $50-$70 worth of tools, AR barrel change is simple enough.

Does existing-barrel have a rail or front sight / gas block combo?

It’s not terribly difficult if you are handy, can do simple repairs, and have a few tools (including a torque wrench). The you need a few specific ar tools. More if you need to remove and replace a front sight gas block combo unit

You tube is your friend. Watch a few videos on replacing a barrel on upper. It will give you a quick feel if you want to tackle the job.

From what I have read, on the web and in literature received with parts, 40lbs. torque seems to be the norm. If the gap for the gas tube doesn't line up you can torque it some more, one reading said to 60 lbs of torque, if that doesn't line it up, you should have received a number of shims with the hand guard barrel nut assembly, add shims re-torque it till the notch for the gas tube provides proper clearance and torque is within the limits.

I never had a problem lining up barrel nut without shims. Lubricate threads undo and re-tighten as many times until it lines up. Each time it will go a little further.

It’s really easy to do. Watch a few YouTube videos and you’ll be building complete AR’s in no time.

It really is very easy. You need a torque wrench, some assembly grease, and the barrel nut wrench. Of course, you need a vise and a method of holding the upper receiver too.

That being said, if you aren't likely to build more uppers, just pay a gunsmith to swap it out for you. Blue Tuna Guns would do a fine job. Good guys. I've dealt with them plenty. If you need their contact info, let me know.

I was going to get the whole upper and just forgetaboutit, The one Im looking at is white oaks, precision Krieger barrel 1200 endogs! , I pulled up the cushions of my couch and I got $2.06 then under the seat of my Jeep $1.40, I was thinking about getting a paper route.

But if bought the barrel . 270.00+ gunsmith ??

If you do it yourself, im in the area and have an upper vice block. Barrel swap is easy enough so long as it doesn't stick in the reciever too badly. Lube it up, tighten and loosen a couple times, and torque to at least 40 lbs.

Even though some say that trueing or squaring the face of the receiver is of no value, it certainly cannot hurt.(Usually these same people will have their bolt action blueprinted though).

Not only do I do that, but I also bed the extension in the receiver. Unnecessary? Maybe. But I do know that so far, all of mine have sub-MOA potential with factory loads from a sandbag rest.

Barrel, trigger, and glass is where to put your money for the best accuracy. Most of the rest is just fluff.

I just unbarreled one last night using two clamps a barrel wrench and a hammer to pop the nut loose. Ive already mounted a new barrel on a new upper. Didnt use a torque wrench since I cant find it. Not too worried. Bt, I guess I should head to the storage unit today to dig it out. So long as ou get to 35 lb/ft you are ok. That isnt terribly tight. Borrow a barrel wrench and a torque wrench and try it. Ive done a couple so far and they aveall stayed tight and right. Just be sure to use anti seize and seat the hreads well.
