Went to the LGS tonight just to poke around and an old acquaintance works there and asked if I wanted to see anything. I'm sure he wouldn't have asked for a permit, but I declined and told him I didn't have my permit yet. Just don't want to get anyone in trouble, including myself. It would have been great to get a feel for what they had there.

In the process... the long painful process. They had just about everything I'm considering too. MP9 shield, P320, VP9, G43, FN9c, PPS, or was it the PPQ? No matter, they had both.

I almost never asked to see a Permit when I was selling guns. Many Gun stores don't ask. Many do not care!

Not quite accurate. You do need a permit to touch handguns. What you don't need is a gun already purchased (yet never touched) to apply for your permit.

In some permit classes you handle (safed & unloaded) handguns, in some you don't. What happens if a NY FFL doesn't have a permit and is selling handguns?

Yes true but I think if the lgs owners give you the ok personally I don't see any issues

Such a stupid, pointless law. When I took my pre-permit safety course, it was at a gun store and after the class the instructor let us handle anything we wanted. No one got hurt.

Being 'allowed' implies you can touch the handgun without recrimination to either you or the FFL. If the FFL chooses to operate his business with common sense and disregard NYistan's draconian law he is potentially opening himself up for legal issues, should he be seen by the wrong person. We know this state will go out of their way to tangle you up for anything related to firearms, whether it's right or wrong.

Being honest never sucks. You did the right thing. You could have asked if you could still handle a weapon without a permit. Then it's up to the seller. (Doesn't make it "right" under current NYS law.)
Yes, the way things are now, I think it's ridiculous you can't try before you buy. You can test drive a car and yet those can kill..

It totally makes no sense. So they expect you to get a gun on your permit within what, 60 days knowing you've likely never handled a gun before and have no idea what works or what feels right. I don't know what their rationale for the law was supposed to be, but I'll bet more often than not, it leads to people buying more guns than fewer as a result of them impulse buying a gun that wasn't just right for them.

If it's an nra certified instructor they are allowed to let you handle guns. Just like how kids are allowed to shoot in competitions in nys with pistols at some certified ranges.

Yeah, yeah, in NY State one needs to have a Permit to possess a Handgun. Are you really possessing the gun if you are just looking at it? I think this is another one of those things that people over time have just convinced themselves of a law that really isn't.

To be honest, I've never seen it, but my pistol permit instructor said that it's illegal. He also said that there was no chance I'd get a permit without administrative restrictions. After what he recommended I put on the application, he's probably right, lol. What solidified it for me was that I noticed at Cabela's they ask just about everyone for their permit when browsing. Could just be a store policy too, I guess.

If it isn't specifically mentioned in the law itself, then it's probably just become a norm because supposition or hearsay. There is so much confusion with the laws here it's unreal. My father thought that even after I got my permit, I'd have to put his guns on my permit also in order to handle them and shoot them at the range. By that logic I'd have to put every handgun I want to look at in the store on my permit, lol. This is the type of misinformation that keeps getting floated around.

NY State has no need to pass new laws, NYer's are so scared and ignorant of our laws anyway. Keep making shit up make losing that much easier!

Don't feel silly. If they let you handle them then don't question it, take advantage of it. Fair warning though, the people behind the counter at gun stores are also some of the originators of misinformation.

Keep in mind that some Counties (such as mine) require you to purchase the pistol before you turn in the application. When I was in the process I always told them that I didn't have a permit yet, and never had a problem handling the merchandise. I too was under the impression this was a no no, but went with the flow.
People in these gun stores tend to be very helpful folks who know all about the BS we go through to obtain a permit.

Obviously, the analogy of getting your driver's license before touching an automobile clearly shows the absurdity of NY handgun laws.

@GOPerfect I remember another thread about this subject and a poster with a FFL said it was a regulation on the dealers license, not something in the penal law? Maybe one of the FFL members could chime in on this! I can't seem to find anything online, I know dealers need a separate license to sell handguns in NY.

I remember a store in the past letting you hold a pistol as long as they held the barrel if you had no permit.
