It comes in very handy when another hand is needed. I keep a bunch of leather and copper scraps around to keep from scratching stuff up. I also made some copper jaw covers to protect delicate stuff.

I have one mounted on my bench in my reloading room in the house. I pretty much use it every day for one thing or another.

I have a vise and never use it for cleaning. I find it indispensable for installing optics, pistol sights, barrels and a whole lot more.

I have a vise mounted out in the shed that i have used occasionally for gun work, I don't have room for one on my loading bench.
I do have a very useful gun cradle that I use for mounting scopes & other things that need to be done.

If yer talking about buying one I would look for a good used one off CL, EBay, flea market or where ever. Brand names do make a difference. Some of the older stuff that was quality is now shit(Craftsman). I do like Wilton but the good ones aren't cheap and they do make some cheap ones that the quality is not there either.

AR-15 sits in the vise anytime work occurs. Have mag block, clamshell, and reaction rod depending on the project.

Large vise is the most important equipment in my set up. I don't use it for cleaning rifles, I have two cleaning cradles for that. I also have a gun vise, different then mechanic's vise. You definitely need regular vise for re-barreling AR's. The bigger the better. They are inexpensive.
Gun vise is nice for mounting scopes and laser sighting new barrels.

I have a bench vise but it is used for other things. I do however have a rotating gun vise for my gun room. Works on handguns too. It is called a Lyman Revolution. Rotates 180 deg.

I use a tipton best gun vise for cleaning and working on firearms most of the time, but I do use a bench vise when working on guns along with thousands of other things. I do not use one when cleaning ever that I recall.
