So I have yet to shoot my M4, but I can't in good conscience live with the gimped mag tube that comes from the factory. Only gimp I want around here is me.

That said, I ordered a Carbon Fiber full length tube. It's on its way. It requires gunsmithing to install. The current, gimped one, is screwed into the recirver and secured with loads of RED LOCTITE. It needs to be broken with my heat gun. Has anyone done this? Tips? Warnings?

I plan on putting it in my gun vise, taking the current mag spring out, taking the trigger group out and heating up the junction hot enough to melt the threadlocker.

I'm all ears.

I heated mine up with a heat gun. It didn't take much to get it to come loose. Just as you said take it apart so you don't heat anything else up. Oh yea put a glove on .

@PutnamCharlie , do you have a pic of yours? Did you clean the threads with BreakFree to get the old loctite out? Did you reapply for the new tube? Time to attain the correct heat?

I did nylon brush off the dried loctite. I did not put loctite on for reassembly.

How long with the heat gun before you started to get somewhere? Applied to the mag, receiver, or right at the junction?

It only took like three or four min on med to get it to break loose. I heated the receiver more than the tube but kept moving it all around it evenly. It's more about expanding the receiver to get the tube to move. Once it moves you can thread it out quickly.

Nice I replaced mine with titanium tube. Stock tube did take a ton of heat but it came off easily once threads were broken loose. I wound up scratching the factory tube but wasn't really too concerned about that. Nice gun good luck with it.

No. Cant even tell it was done. You really don't heat it that much. Just keep the heat gun on the lower setting and keep moving it.

They way oversold the time to break the bond. 15 minutes!? I had it break in under 3, off with 2 thirty second reapplicatons.

First shots with it today. (The gun and the mag.) I issue. The shell ejected on to the elevator, but didn't slide up into the chamber. A pull back and release on the charging handle fixed it. It was birdshot and new, so I don't chalk it up to anything. Fired 30 rounds through of buckshot and birdshot. One failure to lock open with birdshot. I could replicate with limp wristing it, so I'm still learning. This thing is fun as hell.

It shouldnt take too much heat to soften the red locktite. Not enough that it would cause damage to anything at least. Just protect the parts in the vise and strip the gun down to the essentials just to be on the safe side. Fyi, I havent done this on an M4, but i have had to heat up a gun with red locktite on it.

I don't own one but I've seen them run in classes right next to me. They are finicky right out of the box. I am told after time they will cycle better with bird shot. Break it in using buck and slugs for a few hundred rounds and you should be GTG.

The gas/interia system is picky about the ammo it uses. I had cycling issues when running Fiocchi low recoil slugs in mine which my Mossberg 930SPX tactical (which is just gas) ran fine.

I have a benelli M2, its inertia only and it runs the cheap birdshot without a hiccup. Not a single failure so far. In fairness shes probably not fully broken in yet with only a few hundred rounds through her. Butbif anything it should be worse before being fully broke in.

That said Id like to get the Remington V3 18" to add to the stable.
