Could mean that people waste more food, or shift their purchasing to more expensive items.

But supply and demand says if you increase the supply of money without increasing the supply of goods that prices will rise. The specifics might vary, but the rise is inevitable.

And obviously the covid helicopter money was a major inflationary pressure for the same reason.

The covid lockdowns supercharged inflation from the opposite side (cut production, so you had fewer goods for the money to chase).

All in all, if you wanted a textbook inflation recipe, the covid response was it. I expect entire chapters of the next generation of economic 101 textbooks to be dedicated to it.

Probably because the govt doesnt pay the full value of a dollar for the welfare cards... and supply and demand. When there are millions more buying food on tax payers dime than before then prices go up.

EBT/SNAP/WIC/FOOD STAMPS (whatever the fuck it's called now) sets a maximum allowance for each item. No incentive for people to seek the best prices. A store is just going to charge the most the market will tolerate, and the 'market' is government.

That's how I see it at least.

I do find it not amusing that the same box of protein bars I buy at home for $7 (Krogers) is almost $11 here in NY (Tops). And........I get a free plastic bag to carry my purchase to the car when I shop in my home state!

Same reason a college degree costs tens of thousands more than it did in the 60s 70s 80s. The government subsidized it.

Many good replies here. They aren't blaming all of the price increase on food stamps; groceries have gone up a lot more than 15% across the board in the last several years. The finding is that "food prices go up 1% for each 12.5% hike in per capita food stamp spending." And that is explainable by increased waste, and by spending on more expensive items. At the end of the day there is more $ available to spend on the same amount of food. Logically spending on food WILL go up.
Many folks on assistance aren't the greatest at budgeting in the first place, so if you throw more money at them and throw it at people who weren't previously eligible, and they can only spend that money on food, then they will find a way to spend more on food. Whether that is buying steak instead of chicken, not making sure to use food before it spoils in the fridge, or, as is extremely common, buying cases and cases of soda and laundering it back for drug money; which is huge.

Along with paying those folks who sit long hours behind the wheel to bring our crap to the shelves.
