Biden admin announces new gun control rule – here it is​

President Joe Biden’s Department of Justice announced on Monday a new federal gun control rule requiring federal firearms licensees (FFLs) to have secure gun storage or safety devices available for purchase. The rule will take effect Feb. 3 and the DOJ said it is designed to ensure “safe and secure storage of firearms.”

According to the DOJ, secure gun storage or safety device includes “a safe, gun safe, gun case, lock box or other device that is designed to be or can be used to store a firearm and that is designed to be unlocked only by means of a key, a combination or other similar means.”


Because not all storage or safety devices are compatible with different types of guns, FFLs must have varying options compatible with the firearms they sell.

The Biden administration announced a new firearms rule this week in response to last year's tragic school shooting in Michigan that aims to ensure that all gun owners have secure storage devices for their guns.
The Times noted that the rule change came just one month after the arrest of the parents of Ethan Crumbley, the 15-year-old Michigan student who killed four and injured seven others using a firearm he took from his parents' home.



The new rule amends and officially codifies gun storage requirements already mandated under the Gun Control Act of 1999 for new Federal Firearms License applicants. With the new rule, the requirements will be law for "any place where firearms are sold under the license to non-licensed individuals."

In charging documents, Oakland County prosecutor Karen McDonald said the gun had been stored in an unlocked drawer in the parents' bedroom and claimed that the parents ignored several warning signs indicating that their son would carry out the egregious act.

Nowhere does it say you must purchase a case with any firearm. It says the dealer must have a case available for you to purchase. Other than a few kitchen table dealers, I don't know of any that don't have some sort of case. Most handguns come from the factory in some sort of plastic case these days. This is bullshit legislation to be sure, but it really isn't changing anyone's business model. It's all about political optics. Theadministration does this so they can say "See ? We're doing something." even if it is meaningless. A whole lot like those hundred times the republicans voted to get rid of obozo care, but when it actually meant something, they folded. Without reading the entire text of it, there's no way of knowing whether a simple trigger lock would suffice. It may. Those are already provided by most manufacturers.

They can't mandate that you buy it, but they can tax you if you don't.

This. I always throw them away but I believe I have gotten a cheap cable lock with anything I have purchased?

The rule doesn't specifically say a "safe" just a way to lock it up, in the action or putting it in a container, and the seller just has to have them available. More feel good bullshit that does nothing and in the end really doesn't even effect even kitchen table dealers. For less than the cost of lunch they can stock a $7 cable lock and they are good to go.

Why? Have one stack on locking gun cabinet listed for sale for $1,000 at your retail store. The $150-$200 gun cabinet will hold any gun sold and you’re selling it for $1,000, the seller of firearms should only ever need to purchase one with it listed for that price. Have a funny little sign explaining the price and have it right next to the sales counter so you can joke about it. You meet the standard and that’s that. Only thing that will be a pain in the ass is gun shows. Any rule the government comes up with there are generally work arounds. If all else fails just don’t comply.
