Doesn't really affect me, as I bought what is probably a lifetime supply of Russian caliber ammo years ago, and then some.

It's like money in the bank at this point.

They don't have separate production lines for each caliber. If they're going go make some 7.62x39 to fill the Russian void they'll need to skip a batch of something else to do it.

Well, they got to the domestic manufacturers of ammo and went for the next best thing, imports. It just happens to be Russian, if it were Canadian they would have found another excuse.

No.

Just the typical 7.62x39/54r and 5.45x39.

This is mostly because gun related purchasing got put on hold as the last few years were spent getting ready for my move to Florida. That cost me quite a bit of money, but in the end, it was worth it. Probably a good thing I didn't have more ammo in some respect, as the logistics of moving that much ammo down here would likely have caused issues.

My plan was to finish stocking up on the domestic ammo after getting settled down here, but that's been screwed up so far by high pricing and Covid.

Eh? Debating isn't disrespectful, kinda the whole point of the forums. In any case I think you will see I'm right. Supply has just started to rebound but I bet we will see that trend reverse now and prices will remain high for even longer than forecasted now. It's basic economics, demand is high, supply is low and now it's even lower.

Can't see how anyone would disagree at all, but whatever... i despised the stuff, and what I have of it on hand is the last I would ever buy, BUT, a lot of better, more knowledgeable gun owners than I could ever hope to be buy it, use it, and their guns of choice run great on it... this is going to bring us right back to a few months back when ammo of any type was unavailable, and if any did show up was 5 times what it should be...This was planned, and implemented by the gun grabbers in the govt... Would seem like a reasonable workaround but I read somewhere that if it's made (in any sense....even just components) the ban still applies even if it's assembled/boxed in another country. I could be wrong though. I sure hope I am. Have a decent supply of 7.62x39 for my Saiga but it won't last forever.

On the subject of steel cased ammo. I have always been under the impression that our Eastern European rifles ( Ak's, SKS's, Vz's etc ) are designed and manufactured for what is their standard available ammo. That being steel cased and CIP Spec. The barrel and bullet specification is different from our domestic SAAMI Specifications. Even the CZ 527 bolt action is known to be more accurate with Eastern Bloc. CIP ammo than with domestic brass SAAMI ammo.
Only way I would be concerned about the Steel CIP Spec. ammo is if I was shooting something like a Ruger in 7.62 X 39 built to Spec. for SAAMI ammo.

Wolf should be good. They are a U.S. company. They get most of their product from the E.U., but also from Serbia, Ukraine, etc. I think it's brass that comes from Taiwan, shipped elsewhere to be completed.

It's not the guns, it's the cartridges.

7.62x39 is designed to be a steel cased round. It has more taper on the case than 5.56 to facilitate better extraction.

An AR in 7.62x39 should shoot steel fine.


An AK in .223 might still not like it.

An AK chambered in 223 should also work fine. It's when you use steel cased 223 in an AR that the problems may occur.

Just like an AR chambered in 7.62x39 should digest steel all day.

It's the cartridge design that is important for steel, not the rifle.

All .223 rifles will have the same (general) shape chamber, so they will all be at a disadvantage running steel, no matter who makes them.

*All* 7.62x39 rifles will have a chamber shaped to handle lacquered steel cases, because the *cartridge* was designed for it.

Yes, the ammo you've already got a permit to import is still coming.

But the next shipment isn't going to happen.

I don't think the permits are issued for single shipments. The permits are good for 24 months after issuance, but they list the maximum amount of ammo approved for import.

If an importer has a permit for 500,000 rounds and has already imported 480k, they've only got 20k left on that permit. However, if an importer has a permit for 3,000,000 rounds and has only imported 500k so far, that permit has a lot of life left assuming it is not an older one with only a few months before expiration.

The question is, on their application did the importers use the number they truly expected to import over 24 months, or did they put an arbitrary (higher) number on the permit app with a plan to fill only as much of it as they wanted to?

Of course, for those with permits the next problem is finding someone with ammo to sell. I hear the Russians were filling about 40% of the ammo supply. That'll be hard to replace even without the import permit problem.

My opinion, domestic manufacturers will do what it takes to fill the void.

Of course prices are higher, it's the law of supply and demand in a capitalist society.

Not if it costs 10’s of millions to do it and a the next president could change it with the stroke of a pen. Also Biden could reverse it quickly as well.

To further hurt American shooters, and drive up the cost of ammo. When parents dont shoot, kids dont shoot and kids who dont shoot are less likely to be gun people when they are of voting age.
