The ports are choked with empty containers sitting on a chassis with nowhere to go. Containers are being stacked with a shortage of chassis to put them on. In the end, the truck drives are getting screwed as they are not getting paid to wait in line for a haul, and waiting in line they are. If I remember right, the same thing happened in WWII. All the train cars ended up on the East Coast and the Government had to step in to fix it. Now a day's there is not to many things I can think of that the Government has "fixed".

They need to pick some military base in CA with a lot of space and good rail access and put in an open ended buy order for empty containers at a fair price.

They can offer them for sale at the same time, even at a profit.

The Truckers have brought back the empties, on a chassis to the ports. The rails bring them in and need a chassis for the truckers at the destinations.
The docks can unload the crap out of the ships but need to re-load the empties providing a chassis to make room for the load to be put on a chassis. It is like a giant game of Tetris.

Remember back in the day, they actually washed and re-used empty glass beer and pop bottles. Today it is cheaper for them to just smash them. If only they could do that with containers.

Businesses like UPS and FedEx spend a lot of money managing the choreographed ballet of their trailers. It is a 24-7 operation. When a trailer is emptied in the unloading area, it is moved asap to an outbound door or staged. Once loaded, it is moved again to either a staging area for hook up, or a driver hooks up on the door and departs for the assigned location. Unfortunately, it requires micromanaging. Trailers come in sizes from 28 to 40 feet. and in various configurations from flatbeds to drop frames. All of these factors come into play when assigning a destination before loading and then what to do with the empty after unloading.

It may take years to dig out of this mess and there will be massive bankruptcies because of it all.
When the container merchandise is finally delivered the company's that orders won't be around so the liquidators will make a killing.

But hey! On the bright side, we flattened the curve.

Yup! Before any zombie apocalypse, the supply chain must break down. Since everything comes on a truck, once the trucks stop rolling, then collapse can't be far behind. You will know it is here when roving herds start smashing and looting in the inner cities, (the areas that cannot survive without trucks) and then start expanding outward toward the rural areas. It appears as if in some area's this phase has already begun to spark.

when we bought the diesel RV, this was a concern of mine. NO oil. I may run down to the auto parts store and buy a couple (3) gallons of synthetic 10w-30(40) diesel oil before it all goes away

They want small businesses out of business. Small businesses are the independent Americans that pose a threat to the government. Big business controls the government and they work hand and hand to make each other more successful at ruining our lives.
Notice during the pandemic the small clothing store down the street was closed for business forcibly by the government, but you could walk into target or Walmart and buy groceries and try on clothes.

The people stealing are not stealing necessities like soap and food like they want you to believe. They are drug addicts stealing to support their habit. They made poor decisions, there are charities that will help them. I am accountable for my decisions they should be too. The store owner that made the decision to risk his capital and sweat equity in providing a service is being punished whether it is a so-called "necessity" bar of soap or a stupid-looking $15,000 handbag. This kind of thing has happened in every single communist revolution since the beginning of communist revolutions.

It’s rare, but good people do steal out of necessity. Good police officers can see this and make the right choice. My father has gone to places expecting to arrest some one for stealing just to open his wallet and empty it for said person and handing them a card to say if you need something in the future let me know.
Again this is the VAST minority of thefts.
