Just return the question to the asker. Find out if they'd rather get shot with a .45, or a .357, or a .380? Or any other round they believe will be less lethal than a .223/.556 or 9mm.
Explain if they're getting hit center mass with any round they're going to have a very bad day. So the type of round is not gonna matter a whole bunch.

I start by telling the ignorant "ban assault weapon" people that an ar15 is one of the weakest rifles sold. They just don't fucking get it. After explaining that most other rifles, and shotguns are far more powerful, they continue with the nobody needs an assault rifle bs. Someone defending themselves with a 9mm pistol is not trying to shoot at a rifle or to shoot a 5.56 projectile out of the air. A defender is trying to shoot an person intent on killing innocent people. ANY projectile can stop a person if the shot is properly placed.

And that’s where I will call for any caliber bigger than 5.56 to be banned, because if an AR15 in 5.56 is too dangerous, than surely any caliber bigger and more powerful than that can’t be allowed to be in civilian hands like 20 gauge, 12 gauge, 243, 270, 308 or 300 win mag.
