It's theft of tax payer funds of the other 49 states. Construction costs in the country are out of control with zero accountability. I've seen two generations of NYC bridge contract workers pass. Third generation just starting. lol Lanes closed daily. That completed rail system of 96 billion would need 4.8 billion in revenue annually to recover building costs in 20 years.

From 88 billion to 128 billion is a 50% increase. How can you do an estimate like this and put this to anyone reasonably intelligent

The problem is no one can do simple math these days. This is projected to coast 8.3 billion and is projected to have 11 million passengers per year. Of course it will go over projected costs and I doubt there will be 11 million passengers yearly.
The portion between San Fran and Vegas is to cost 3 billion and if all 11 million go there it will take 275 years to recoup the cost of a ticket is $1.00. That’s not counting any overhead at all. Of course tickets won’t be a dollar.
Now 11 million people divided by 365 days in a year is over 30,000 people daily and that won’t happen either. We need projects that have an ROI not just feel good.

High speed rail is a great way to travel. Its too bad that government bloat always destroys good projects and makes them financially disastrous. Getting around Europe is a piece of cake with their rail systems. And they had centuries worth of existing infrastructure to work around. And they figured it out.
