So - a Federal Holiday intended on focusing on one very specific racial segment of the population, and one that fosters exclusivity, division, separation, identity politics, and (reverse?) discrimination. What a brilliant idea. Let's keep shoving race and sexuality down everyone's throats until things come flying apart at the seams.

July 4th means nothing to me.
Juneteenth will mean nothing to people who consider themselves to have no connection to it. Such is the fate of a country like the USA, with its peculiar history.

The 4th means you are not a subject of a Queen.


The 4th was when half the country stopped being property. Juneteenth was the rest. But without the 4th, you'd still be a royal subject, not a free man.

Being a subject of England or the United States of America is a meaningless distinction.

The fact remains.

The institution of slavery was brought to this land by the British crown and ended by the US Government.

To this day, the UK doesn't have citizens, they have subjects.

Does the holiday really make a difference and impact your life in a positive way (other than a day off)? My ancestors didn't come to this country until the very early 1900's. Slavery was probably not even a memory for them at that time as they had their problems. Immigrants of most nationalities were persecuted when they first came here. Make the best of it, don't get caught up in it, and rise up above it, many many did.

I'm proud to be an American, it sounds as though you are not.

In 1852, the Ladies Anti-Slavery Society of Rochester, New York, invited Frederick Douglass to give a July Fourth speech. Douglass opted to speak on July 5 instead, and, addressing an audience of about 600, he delivered his “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” speech.
In this speech Douglass spoke about racial injustice and the bitterly ironic promises of equality and liberty laid out in the Declaration of Independence. He demonstrated that the principles expressed in the Declaration are eternal, but America does not live up to them in practice.

I share Douglass' views on the meaning of Independence Day.

A quote from the speech:

"Fellow-citizens, pardon me, allow me to ask, why am I called upon to speak here to-day? What have I, or those I represent, to do with your national independence? Are the great principles of political freedom and of natural justice, embodied in that Declaration of Independence, extended to us? and am I, therefore, called upon to bring our humble offering to the national altar, and to confess the benefits and express devout gratitude for the blessings resulting from your independence to us?"

After the civil war I think it safe to say the majority of "social injustices" were propagated by confederate soldiers whom were put into positions of authority as judges and the like by democrat politicians. So were these social injustices the work of the majority of the populace, I think not. As is the case today, the will of the people is generally disregarded by politicians.

I picked a couple quarts of cherries and that's it, too hot out there...
