I wonder how "soft" (relatively speaking) one could get this beast to shoot.

Being piston driven, I belive with a tunable piston/gas block. And play with the spring and buffer weights

450bm is a fun choice and most parts are interchangeable with standard AR15 parts (really just need a barrel and bolt and mag follower, or one of the few 450bm magazines)

That was one I was thinking of building, but don't you also need an upper with an enlarged ejection port? I was thinking 458 socom also.

Yes and no.. people have gotten away with normal uppers, but for more reliable use they recommend using a larger ejection port

The good news is you can open up a standard ar ejection port, or Aero sells their XL (thats what i got) uppers, hell I got one "on sale" because it was a blemish

.450 BM is the big fun AR. Aero makes an upper with an enlarged ejection port. Aero XL works for both .450 & .458 socom.

And the good thing about 450 vs 458 is ammo cost is less and 450 is widely available (well not during ammo shortages) so 450 is more available and cheaper

458 sounds cooler and feeds more reliably and wider range of bullet weights and bullets more designed for rifle speeds

You need a 450bm bolt..

Id suggest checking out Tromix (they have some sweet bolt barrel combos) and if you ever venture over to the 450bm or 458socom forums (they are kind of boring and quiet) Tromix is pretty much the best name in the game for big bore AR (mainly barrels and bolts, and iirc the owner has had a hand in the development of the 458socom)

I’ve been looking at the 350 Legend.

I made one and it is awesome!!!! Very accurate, pleasant to shoot, and lots of bullet options for reloading. Hollow points on a milk jug at 100 yards is pretty cool!

Here's my bucket list BN36 30-06, that lives in PA now, along with my un neutered M1A loaded stainless.
I was in the process of making it SAFE act compliant, but couldn't bring myself to remove the brake threads after shooting it without the brake.
It has a stout recoil without the brake.
