Bill introduced in NYC to make it illegal to contact workers after hours

Not that I wouldn't mind actually not being contacted off-hours, but this will force basically all of NYC's tech industry to move elsewhere. If there's an issue in the middle of the night, and the people who built that product need to be contacted, do you REALLY think the business is going to take hundreds of thousands of dollars in business losses? Or are they going to just suck up the fine that NYC will put on such actions?

Personally, I think it'll be the latter. It's just another tax in disguise probably.

Hourly workers, salary persons, big differences can apply. A 9 - 5 worker can get e-mails all night from his / her salaried manager. Read / deal with them when they get in at 9am and are on the clock. On vacay or personal time? Fuck off unless there's compensation involved.

I get a lot of calls from work when they're looking to fill open jobs. I can either answer and say yes or no or I can ignore the call. Not that hard to do.

If you work in IT, that’s also not an option. If something breaks in the middle of the night they’re calling you to fix it. Still, that’s part high salary.

If they do this, all they’ll do is force companies to not offer these middle class jobs, and instead create cheaper paying positions by just hiring all Indian guys overseas to begin with.

And you know what I’ll do if NYC fucks me out of a job? Move to Texas sooner and take my tax dollars. No reason to stay when I can go to Austin at that point.

That’s how this will play out if these idiots do this.

I have a friend that used to fix atms and cash registers. He was on call every other weekend and had to respond to problems. He got paid extra for that weekend even if he didn't get a call just because he might have to cancel his plans. If he had to go in he got ot. I think that type of set up is fine. You know the job and it's up to you to accept it or not.

I was told by my boss that any new salaried employee hired where I work was going to be on call 24/7. I don't think they've hired any salaried people since the big wigs said that. Can't imagine why. They don't give you any time off during the week to make up for working the weekend so if there's a problem and you're there all weekend you have to work 12 days for nothing extra.

There have been cases where salaried employees have won suits against their employer for making them work 50+ hours a week without extra compensation. The employee thought they were hired for 40-45 hours per week.

Well that's a different thing. If you're reliably doing more hours than you signed up for, the company is supposed to give you comp days -- and most places I've been at, do that.

Now, if they don't do that, then the description is/was inaccurate, and that would be grounds to actually take them to court over it.

Well I was talking about salaried. What they're doing at your job sounds potentially illegal, and definitely like bullshit.

At work they give us a comp day that we can use whenever, with some degree of heads up, in the next six months normally. I normally just use them towards when I go on vacation.
