5. New York: In 2008, New York passed a law to escheat 80% of unclaimed deposits. In 2013, New York passed a law which requires $23 million in unclaimed deposits to go the state Environmental Protection Fund (EPF), with the remaining unredeemed deposits going to the state General Fund. None in PA eitherWe don't have to put up with that bullshit down here in the Carolinas, - no deposit law here!
My son's friend in PA brings his NY deposit cans north on trips here. He buys ammo with the proceeds. No deposit in PA but cans are stamped NY deposit. He's a former NY resident with a grudge. FNY!None in PA either
I'm sure NY would consider that a crime. My son's friend in PA brings his NY deposit cans north on trips here. He buys ammo with the proceeds. No deposit in PA but cans are stamped NY deposit. He's a former NY resident with a grudge. FNY!
It is a crime. Michigan has it in their law and in NY law. I work in Michigan from time to time. $.10 deposit there. So I turn in my NY cans when I head west. Just enough to say "up yours." I am ungovernable.I'm sure NY would consider that a crime.
It would be cool if enough people did that to hurt the state financially. I'll bring cans and bottles back next time if I'm coming this way anyway.
NY will put individual serial numbers on their beer cans. They're that stupid. It is, but how are you or they going to prove it? Most pop (soda) sales are cash.
It's really meant for those who have a trailer full of cans/bottles and cash in on thousands of dollars in deposits. Even then, it's questionable if it would even hold up in court.
A friend who worked a summer job at a local bottle depository told me that there was a lot of forgery going on with bottle labels. Like people relabeling non-returnable bottles (really meant for normal recycling streams). Nothing was ever done about it either.

Ammo money! So basically you're saying that you're actually pulling the scam that Newman and Kramer tried?
My brother in Christ...you sir are BASED.
I asked the person at a bottle depot place how they make money. She told me the distributors have to give them $0.08 or $0.12 per can/bottle (I don't remember which amount). I had so many beer bottles at the time, I almost called a distributor to come pick them up.I forsee this having an impact on all those bottle & can recycling centers you see everywhere. If they raise the deposit, the people bringing them in get more money back for each can / bottle. These places make profit on the difference between the deposit and the material recycling value.
Back in the early 90s, I was new to the area and broke. I had a new job but it paid bi-weekly and my first paycheck wouldn't be for a month.Collecting bottles and cans will be considered an actual job in NY
Was there a specific outfit that attracted the most "clients"?Back in the early 90s, I was new to the area and broke. I had a new job but it paid bi-weekly and my first paycheck wouldn't be for a month.
15 minutes a day at the 84/684 interchange was grocery and gas money for a while
You should see the parking lots the day after a Bills game. Canners a plenty with multiple giant plastic bags. People are such freaking slobs. There were two elderly walkers in my old neighborhood who walked with a plastic bag and picked up the discarded deposit bottles and cans. I hope I'm walking about at their age. You can bet your ass I'll be packing......Back in the early 90s, I was new to the area and broke. I had a new job but it paid bi-weekly and my first paycheck wouldn't be for a month.

our range had to put up a fence and badged gate because someone was coming in and stealing the brass.Bottle pickers no different than people who chase their brass at the range and come home with more than they brought.
