WASHINGTON – Calling racism the "poison of America," Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer gave his support Tuesday to a bill to set up a commission to study reparations.

"The disparities in race affect everything, not just the obvious things, but the non-obvious things” like pollution and climate change, Schumer explained.

The bill, proposed by Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey and Texas Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee would form a commission to study ways to make an apology for slavery and make payments to the descendants of slaves. Booker and Jackson Lee introduced the measure in April 2019.

“The legacy of slavery and Jim Crow are still with us,’’ Schumer told a small group of reporters in the U.S. Capitol.

Often times when there is a conversation about slavery reparations, its advocates bring up restitution paid by Germany to Holocaust survivors. Just for the record, Germany doesn't pay a dime to descendents of Holocaust survivors or descendents of those who didn't survive. Only actual victims who are still alive.

Same vein, everyone I know thinks slaves should get reparations. Good thing we don’t have any.

These studies are just to piss people off. Notice nobody has any actual proposition of what this would look like.

The problem is once they start the ball rolling with these studies it will not stop. Politicians and the media will jump on board. Those who don't will be demonized. What seems far fetched now can become a reality in a decade or two.
I remember when people were laughing at the idea of gay marriage and it wasn't that long ago.

And you decided to get off your ass and make something of your life and now you are rich. Don't blame poor decisions made by today's black population on slavery. Do NFL, NBA, MLB players that decended from slaves get money too? It's a shame they can't enjoy their lives.

Every race has stupid and lazy people. Stop blaming current white people for something that happened 150 years ago. Learn from history. Don't try to punish another race for past mistakes

This is possible and should be considered. I do have a hard time thinking how it could be practically applied, though. Who pays, how much, how long, how do you prove you're a descendant, etc.

One thing is for sure it would divide the country like mad. I really do believe it would be injurious to blacks if it went through. A race-based permanent underclass. It would be terrible for the country.

The left is actively trying to undermine and destroy us. As a country we are committing suicide on a national level.

In some not to far off election cycle after Dems have a super majority since they manipulated our country's demographics for their political gain, it's inevitable it will happen.

After anyone with dark skin gets their reparations....

Then we need to import a few million more permanent underclass refugees and "undocumented migrants". They can be the next group of reputations because ya know, our laws were mean spirited and racist against them.

It's conceivable that this stuff Trump said recently and has doubled down on is to force the dems to get behind this group of women who actively hate much of what america stands for, and create a clear line between republicans and whoever the hell the dems have raised up. AOC must be loving all this attention. She is the face of the democratic party now. Then you have the has-beens like schumer trying to latch onto reparations to stay relevant.

There are five bloodline descendants of Adolf Hitler. They should be just as responsible for paying reparations to the millions of descendants of those killed in concentration camps as any white American should be responsible for paying reparations to descendants of slaves.

The reparations these imbeciles propose is assigning culpability upon every uninvolved American to descendants of those disgustingly treated slaves. Neither Americans today nor the descendants today deserve the treatment of culpability or reparations.

One other note to ponder. Not only was my family completely 100% disassociated with slavery (my first ancestor to immigrate to the USA was in 1918), but most of the country didn't participate in slavery either.

So let's just punish all white Americans for the actions of a few. Sounds about right for 'their' agenda.

Is there any talk about reparations for Native Americans/American Indians? I mean they were treated just as bad if not worse? How about the Irish? Or the Italians? Or Jews? Or Catholics? Or descendants of Japanese who were interned during WWII? They all had a really rough go of it here.

The point I'm trying to make is that the questions that need to be asked are: Who pays for it? How much? (40 acres and a mule I don't think will set well with most descendants of slaves). And most importantly, when will it end? If we're going down this road of never ending payments and reparations we might as well just create a universal basic income and be done with it.

They got a formal apology and $20,000 for each surviving internee. Completely justified in my opinion. Key word though is "surviving."

How many surviving slaves do we have presently?
