Search progress so far: loving the idea of a Henry Big Boy steel side gate carbine in .357/.38 because of the caliber, size, and weight. Not to mention they have a nice feel. Still have plenty of others to look at. The Big Boy X is growing on me. Gotta stop and remember to think about what he would like best.

I’ve shot plenty of “ real rifles “ throughout the years. Chuck hunted with .50 cal. Barrett rifle, hunted black bear with 30-06, 30-30 & .35 Rem. Shot just for fun both 300 Wn. Mag and it’s big Brother the 300 Rem. Ultra Mag. Sprinkle in plenty of .308 , .270 & .280 and you’ll get the picture. These days There’s nothing like the comfortable thump of a pistol caliber lever gun that can still get the job done just about as well as All of those calibers can. Excluding the Rem. Ultra Mag of course.
Got a few choices. One option I like most (so far) is a Henry Big Boy steel side gate. Nice feel, weight, 10 rnds vs 7 for the carbine version, and better muzzle velocity. In my various travels I put my hands on a Ruger American Ranch in 5.56 and I can’t stop thinking about getting it for him. Ugh, I really don’t wanna like that Ranch, but it’s growing on me. And then I discovered the Henry Long Ranger in 5.56 and I’m really on the fence, because that checks a lot of boxes with a lever, solid performance and relatively inexpensive and easy to find ammo. (I said relatively!)
