The metal content of our coinage has been worthless for over half a century. This is nothing new.

1964 was the last year half dollars, quarters, and dimes were minted using 90% silver.

1933 was the year Roosevelt outlawed owning gold coins and gold certificates. They actually confiscated and melted down the existing, at the time, gold coinage.

1974 Ford legalized gold coin ownership once again.

1943 the mint used steel instead of copper to mint the cent. The copper was needed for the war effort. In 1944 they reverted back to copper.

1982 was the last year the cent was minted in copper. They switched over to zinc.

The nickel has been more expensive to mint than the metal content is worth for a long time. Switching metals is no surprise. Nickel isn't a precious metal anyway.
