Bought my first Chronograph

Had a hard time with the reviews and spending money for the 2 better options but I lucked out buying this one. It works freaking great, has given me no problems at all and it takes me no time to set it up. Clocked my 204 with 32gr nosler boat tail at 3850fps coming out of a 20 inch barrel. Clocked my 223 at 2950fps shooting 60gr Nosler boat tail out of a 16" barrel. Clocked my 6.8 with 100gr Nosler boat tails at 2650fps out of a 16" barrel.

You can stick a cleaning rod in the end of your gun if you feel you need to. This will tell you if you are going to shoot it. This should be only a needed option when using guns with tapered barrels.

I bought Chrony F-1 over 20 years ago. It was $40. I use it once every 5 years or so. It does the job well.

Chronographs are very useful for airguns. If you are getting the right velocity, you know all the seals and valves are working properly. It takes some tinkering to make chronographs to work indoors with pellets. There are specially made ones, but they are expensive.

This nice little unit can be set up in about 30 seconds. It can be used in any daylight conditions, which would include inside your house. The case that it came in could be put in your back pocket. Its a sweet little unit. The only negative for some would be using it to sight in the gun. It attaches to the barrel so it would fuck with barrel harmonics and you would be slightly off on point of impact.

I love mine. There's an adapter (costs about $30) that lets you download it to a smartphone. You'll need their app but it's free, as I recall. It does all the calculations for the series and lets you email everything. Typing in the load notes is the longest part of the process.

I saw that and might get it but it depends how much I will use this thing.

Robin if you bought one of these let me know how it works,,,especially if you have tapered barrels its being used on. Dont you also own a 6.8,,,if you do,,,do you reload for it?

Yes, I reload for the 6.8 SPC and my all time favorite the 8mm Mauser. I can't remember the make and model, I'll get it later if you need it, but it works great. I'm not sure what you mean by 'tapered barrels' and how that would be a factor?!?!?!

I figured tapered barrels would be a factor because of the way the chrono mounted. Tapered barrels? Maybe I dont know what I'm talking about either. I was meaning a barrel that is fatter and goes skinny where the mount is,,,instead of staying one size. Reason why I am asking is because I plan on chronoing my 10/22 and my 17hmr,,,,,which I havent taken out of their hidey holes in a long time,,,,so I'm not sure what the barrels look like.

Whats your reload for the 6.8,,,powder? bullet?

I put mine on a Savage with a sporter barrel profile - no issues. I actually carry a segmented cleaning rod in the case so that I can verify that the bullet won't hit. A guy at my club hit his - left a nice yellowish streak but it survived and worked.

They sell tapered shims if you need them ($12 on Amazon) or you could use a piece of cloth or something under the front of the regular spacers.

Jamie, I'm probably just a little thick headed but I don't get how if the barrel is straight, tapered, or even swamped, it would have any effect on the measurement the Chrono provides, not being obtuse, just struggling to understand.
In the 6.8 SPC I am using 26gr. Reloader 10X, 110gr sierra Pro-Hunters, Loaded below the maximum listed in my book, Took my first deer with a centerfire rifle last fall using this load.
Loading 24gr Reloader 10X, 115gr ball for plinking at the range, also below the recommended maximum in my book. Very consistently accurate, well the above load is too, the bullets just cost more.
I did buy some 90gr Gold Dot's that I will be experimenting with and try to get the maximum out of them for this years hunting. I'm really enjoying the process and thank everyone here for rekindling my interest in this field of shooting that I thought was all in my past.

Yeah I saw those shims when I was browsing amazon today.
