BPD called for man with a gun on a Paddleboat

I was supposed to meet some friends out Saturday night for some drinks. They were renting one of those paddle boat bars (I heard for around $ 600 for the rental) in the evening and then going out later for drinks. My friend's 50th B Day party. I couldn't make it out for late drinks since it was our anniversary weekend and we went to dinner. So here's what I was told went down after my buddy's hangover wore off.

They are apparently about to board the boat and buffalo PD starts to arrive one car, two, three, four, all told somewhere around 10-12 officers. They were called for a "man with a gun". Everyone getting ready to board the boat was detained and they officer's said they were looking for a middle aged white man with a dark colored baseball cap. One other guy nearby was interviewed and let go. Turns out they were looking for my friend, who I know has a CC permit and utilizes it as often as he can.

Police told him the boat operator contact BPD and reported someone with a handgun "waving it around" at the docks. After interviewing my friend, it was obvious that wasn't the case and the boat operator (captain) must've made out a print and panicked. I don't yet know if there was a pre-existing no firearms policy, a sign, or anything else at this point. I also don't know the name of the company but some online searching lists only a couple to speak of.

I'm pretty shocked that a boat captain would exaggerate from "printing" to "waving it around". Might be a greenhorn. Most boat captains I have seen and known are pretty impervious to getting panicked about firearms and many have them close at hand themselves. Nothing like a panicked captain to spoil an adults night out. Any boat name?

Seems to me it's almost impossible to get charged with a false statement to police, particularly if you were "in fear".

So I spoke to the individual in question.

1. Not only BPD on scene but Sherrifs and Coast Guard as well.

2. Buffalo Cycleboats was the outfit providing the booze barge. The company refunded their $600.00.

3. Apparently "Captain Nick" was the root cause of the problem. Apparently his pre-launch orientation was a harbinger of things to come. He was happy to spin tales of all the shit he flung on previous outings. Someone even mentioned his attitude to him pre-launch. Its suspected that the "patriotic" nature of the clothing the group was wearing, coupled with their discussion of things like shooting, hunting, etc. didn't help Nick the Dick (which apparently he called himself Captain Dick proudly) with his containment of libtard urges. The 2nd mate told my friend, after Captain Dick bailed from the helm and opted to hang off the outside of the boat all the way back to port, that he's had some issues before and he didn't think she even knew he made the phone call. No anti carry signs were displayed or anything mentioning any issues with CC passengers.

My friend will be further discussing this with the owner and I'd suspect Captain Dick will be looking for another top flight position in either the food service or janitorial industries.

What motivation would they have to lie? You know they don't get some bonus or reward for arresting idiots, right? I've never seen anyone who would want to unnecessarily create mounds of paperwork and report writing for themselves and subject themselves to testify at trial when no good cause existed.

And what would possess them to pick a random guy and "get him to talk"? What would he possibly have to talk abut? You are sounding a little paranoid.

The last thing I'll leave you with is this. If a LEO is interacting with you on a call for service and asks you if you have a gun on you and you try your smart ass approach, you will probably soon find yourself on the ground and in cuffs until they can sort it out and verify. You will possibly be taken down at gunpoint. Other than that, you sound really cool!
