I haven't had any issues with brass in the face yet, but I've only used one type of ammo so far with this gun. Actually if anything I've had issues with the brass hitting my right arm (I'm a lefty). So I thought it might be fun to try and make a brass deflector. I know MCarbo makes one, but I don't like their design. No offense to them, but theirs looks like a hasty attempt or after thought and I think I can do better.
So my first attempt was with using thin Kydex ( 1/8 inch ). The overall design works well, but my concerns are being able to countersink screws to fasten it to the gun and also the heat from the sun potentially heating the thin Kydex up and warping it should it be left in the sun for any length of time. So, my next attempt was to basically do a laminate (I only had 1/8 thick Kydex on hand) with two pieces of Kydex glued together with PC7 epoxy. I figure the epoxy layer will give it the rigidity to resist the thermoforming nature of the Kydex should it ever get heated up by the sun or whatever.
For now I am just using double sided tape to hold it on the carbine, but the plan is to drill and tap two holes and fasten it to the carbine that way. I don't really like the idea of gluing it.
For now, I need to try it out and see if it causes any malfunctions Etc. and if it needs adjustment or if it needs modification. I'm thinking it's possible that I may need to angle the top down to help deflect the brass down instead of at my arm, but we'll see. Thoughts?
