What's everyone using for case trimming and chamfer/deburring?

I just did a couple hundred .223 using the older Lee trimmer first chucked up in a drill, then in my mill. My fingers are killing me from tightening and loosening the case holder.

I have the oddest feeling that the balance between ram pressure to hold the case tight against the trimmer, vs. pressure that will stop the case from spinning is a very delicate balance...

i just use the lee trimmer also, drill in a vise , its just getting the feel for speed of drill and pressure , the rest on my lyman case preper
for chamfer and primer forming / cleaning ..

I use the RCBS trimmer with the drill hooked to it. Then I use a case prep center to chamfer, debur and ream the primer pocket. Your fingers will hurt after running the prep center for a while. If I had to buy all over again I would buy the world's finest trimmer as linked above.

I've found it works quite well.

In progressive press: One station to deprime/resize, cycle to empty station where brass can be removed and measured (and replaced if too long), next station to trim (using low speed drill or battery-powered screwdriver).

I prime off-press and use another tool head with dies to charge, seat, and factory crimp.

With the power trimmer, inside and outside chamfer is done along with the trimming. It saves a few steps per case.

I use the RCBS Case Prep station with a lee trimmer at one of the stations. I use a hand driver to hold the lee shell holder. Lee also has a 3 jaw chuck that would be less painful on your hands.

It trims and chamfers/deburs all in one step, it is extremely consistent and has sped my case prep time up

Anyone in the westchester area wants to try it out I can lend it to you as I have to reload the 2k prepped 223 cases before i prep anymore

I read through the Giraud manual. It recommends not keeping the drill horizontal when using the chip catcher. They recommend inserting the case downward into the trimmer.

What has been you're experience with your setup?

(And...damn! I see another trimmer purchase to add to my: Lee standard trimmer (with mount to go into Lyman Xpress prep station) and my Lee Power Trim Deluxe. On well...live (and purchase) and learn...)

I've been using a pocket reamer tool on my Lyman Xpress (rotary station). It is fatiguing on gloved hands to remove the crimps on a lot of brass in one sitting. Then...I still have to uniform and clean the pockets (two more stations).

What's the fastest way to handle primer pocket prep on .233?

I have a RCBS swager Primer Pocket Swager - Bench Tool - RCBS tool to remove crimps but is you still want to do it your way try using a pair of spark plug pliers. Sears.com to hold the brass.

I may just need to get the Giraud Tri-Way, chuck it up in my drill press a medium speed, put a tray under the chuck to catch chips, and trim away.

This is the best brass trimmer you can get. Does trimming, deburring and chamfering in one step. It's pricey, so not for everyone, but if you do a lot of brass, it's the money well spent. US Army Marksmanship Unit uses it as well.

You don't have to because it presses everything to the depth you se it to. I don't uniform pocket primers on my 223s unless it is for precision work but, then I am not using mil surplus brass for that. for my '06 mil surplus brass I just use a primer pocket uniformer because the crimps are pretty light.

Good to know.

I've had to use the uniformer tool after rotary cutting/reaming out the brass rings used to crimp some .223 primers. Being able to cut out the reaming would be great. It is the most time consuming step.

If doing many casings Little Crow WFT on a drill press and if I need precision or case forming Lyman trimmer with power drill. Crank for ultra precision.

I dont use my drill press, i use a hand drill with the trigger zip tied upside down in my vice to keep the shavings in the bottom of the cutter

I have to sort and trim by headstamp to get a consistent measurement but for plicking loads i set it in a midrange and zip through them

I use the RCBS press mounted primer pocket swager. I've probably done around 1000 cases through it and am happy with it.

I like not having to bolt it to the benchn as opposed to the stand alone unit.

Dillon tool works very well and can speed up the job. RCBS came out with a similar tool few years ago (not the one pictured above). I seen it at their display, but never used it.
