So, my daughter drives a car in my name in Buffalo. A couple of days ago, one of her headlights burns out. (It is the third time this has happened,- it is a problem with this particular year and model car.)
As she’s is driving home from work on the same day it burned out, she is stopped by a BPD cop in North Buffalo over it. She tells him she is on her way to AutoZone on Hertel Ave. to get a new bulb. He tells her she is full of it, and she said, “No, that’s where I’m headed right now”. He says he will follow her there, and in fact he does! WTF? He does not ticket her.
So, she goes in; buys it, comes out and shows him. At this point, he says she needs to come by the precinct on Hertel tomorrow, and prove to them that she has had it replaced.
She gets her boyfriend to replace it last night, and goes by the Hertel Ave. precinct tonight after work to show them it is fixed.
Now, they present her with a paper they call a “Notice of Correction”, and tell her she needs to pay them $10 by cash or debit card and sign the form. She says that they didn’t give her any such form yesterday, or even mention it, and she is not going to sign it, or pay the $10 either.
They then made her wait 15 minutes, and then they came out said “OK, you’re free to go”.
This whole thing smells like shit to me. I wish she had gotten a copy of the form, but she did not. Since when do we have to pay the cops and not the courts over a traffic infraction??? And there was no ticket issued either! It strikes me that they are using some BS here to fund their coffee fund or some other expense,- and going after ignorant and uninformed drivers to collect from.
I call BS. Anybody else ever hear of this?
