Burr in the barrel

I just received a new upper with a stainless steel varmint barrel and where the gas port enters the bore there is a noticeable burr. You can feel it when you run a patch through, you can see it when looking down the bore. How do you folks deal with something like this, send it back, or is their a home remedy? Really, this can't be normal.

You can take the gas block off and run a dental pick down the hole to try and dislodge it.i usually do that and run a patched jag down the barrel a few times in both directions. It will break off eventually.

Well, this is interesting. So I guess it is not uncommon, but it makes me wonder why they don't ensure burr removal at the shop where it was fabricated. This is from Stag and I guess I expect more from them. Its hard to tell but it looks like a fine burring circling the entire edge of the gas port, which is bigger than I thought it would be. So a dozen rounds or so of ball ammo should clean it up? Thank you all for the responses, what a crappy way to start the day at four AM, Hah!

I have a .270 brass jag that I tipped with a flannel patch coated with some Hoppe's and ran down the bore about ten times. A very tight fit but I did draw out some fine chips and it does feel better. I guess a few rounds of ball ammo will take care of any remaining schmutz. I tend to over think things sometimes and get myself all in a lather. An un-scheduled range trip is in order!

Ha ha ha. Funny that people think stag is good shit. for the most part they make oem stuff. Nothing great. They probably dont even make their own barrels, but i do not know this for sure.

That being said, my friend has a real good stag 3 gun rig that shoots very nice.......still not as good as the custom/high end quality barrels.

Everything I have received from them has been top notch and consistently very accurate. This is the first thing I have bought from them since the 'G' forced out the original owner.

The burr is on an inside hole, difficult to remove from a manufacturing/machining standpoint. If the barrel was factory test fired it would have carbon and copper in it making it look like a used barrel, damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Several years ago I helped trouble shoot an upper (PSA?), gas hole had a burr across it reducing the gas hole cross section, short cycling. We took a tap handle and prayed me matched the hole size with a carbon drill, gently we used the drill as a hand reamer and opened it up. Didn't see a burr pushed into the barrel interior. Rifle took about 100 shots to break in but ultimately started grouping nice. Reading your post I suspect we had a burr in the barrel. Even on my bolt guns I don't expect out of the box accuracy. The moral of the story would be to not use expensive ammo on a new gun.

You could use the TUBB bore lap technique or the Wile E Coyote gunsmithing method.

I got a ton of ball ammo reloads, so I plan to run a bunch through and monitor the situation. This is my third barrel from them, the first two were sub-MOA right out of the box and continue to be so. As always, an optimistic realist: Things will work out, if not, I will force them to.

The burr will be gone with the first one or two rounds . No big deal. I had a barrel like that from a very respectable supplier. It's not uncommon. On the other hand there smith who will take an extra step to get rid of the burr when machining the barrel. The biggest negative to this is you can damage a coated cleaning rod, if you decide to use it to run a patch through the bore before you shoot. Don't worry about anything else just shoot it. First few rounds may be way off, so don't go by them when zeroing.

I ran 50 rounds through it and not being too concerned with accuracy was pleasantly surprised with a beer can size group at 100yds, after about eight rounds to zero it, and I wasn't even trying that hard. One thing, when I got home and was wiping down the gun, I'm not sure, but it looked like condensed gas vapor on the barrel just ahead of the gas block. Allen screws seem to be tight enough, but its something to keep an eye on, damn!!! If it is a leak, what is the remedy? something I can do myself?

Blue Loctite on the block/barrel junction around the gas port? I've never tried it myself but I've seen it recommended before.

If it cycles ok, don't worry about it. There is always some gas leak from the gas block/gas tube. It's not a perfect seal.

Place I worked used an extrude hone to deburr/polish holes in inaccessible places. It was the same type media used for polishing inside intake manifolds for HP cars. It basically pushed this play-doh type material with an abrasive in it through the holes.
