Businesses having trouble staying afloat because of lack of workers

I ran a few errands the other day EVERY single place I stopped had help wanted signs.


Our economy and supply chain are genuinely breaking. There is real trouble on the horizon.

Subway on Ridge road has a sign for $17 an hour.. To make sandwiches?? LMAO!

And now subs will cost $10 and no one will buy them and they will go out of business

My wife works for a large not for profit agency. They have a genuine staffing crisis where they are like 25-30% under staffed and she cannot even get applicants.

Anyone know how much 'income' and unemployed person brings in? Yesterday, I heard up to $57k, but haven't fact checked that yet. If single, couple kids, unemployed, + all available benefits - I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if that figure is accurate. Going to work full time, many of these folks would earn less than $30k.

It's not that high now. Last summer it was in many cases a $50k cutoff (!) in that you'd make more not working. Some states have shit unemployment bennies and some have tons. A state like NY you'd get decent unemployment from state PLUS $600/week (WTF!!!) extra, so you're making $30k/year just from the fed unemployment, plus your regular state. Then throw stimmies on top why would you wait tables when you can make twice as much sitting at home?

And I do not blame these people at all. They are making a rational, sound decision. I absolutely blame the government for making this the paradigm and making me pay for it.

My company is giving extra referral bonuses now if we find people.

It's a tragic comedy that the gov mandated many of these businesses shut down and then when it lets them open it kicks them out at the knees by offering a far more competitive "wage" using its helicopter money, so now they can't even recover properly.

I was just in Runnings yesterday and their entire firearms section of the store is shut down. You can't buy guns, ammo, or even optics "until further notice." Apparently the chicken feed section of their store is more profitable because they've closed down the entire firearms section due to staffing shortages.

I'm pretty patient and tolerant in a lot of areas. I can NOT tolerate a store shutting down a certain section because they don't have the staff. They advertise they're open, that means the whole store is open. If you don't have the staff to open your whole store, close it and advertise. Don't waste my time by saying you're open, only to find out that certain sections of the store are open. Heck even a sign that says, "We are short staffed, you may have to wait for a manager to look at/purchase firearms." No, instead they just stop selling them.

Thats for an individual. Throw in a spouse and a few kids.

We regularly shut down 20-40% of our production due to staffing.

This is the issue with our supply chain. So many manufacturers are operating at reduced capacity it's causing a cascading effect.

Have you tried to buy spare parts lately? Kitchen appliances? Equipment? Machinery?

My wife works for a college and she has a horrible time hiring people. They start full time from home(on-line teaching) at $65,000. That’s good pay to walk into a job. She is a department lead so it’s here job to hire people. She hires people and they don’t even complete the on boarding process. They will give 3 extensions to the on boarding process currently. Last time all her interviews were useless and a time waster. She had to teach this time around because the short staffing. She gets paid but didn’t want to do it.

I agree. But personal pride is sadly missing from a huge amount of the population. Qe are full blast into a generation that grew up with the participation trophy mentality. Theres plenty of perpetual leeches they have no qualms about gaming the system in anyway they can. Many of them would stay home even for less than what they're getting right now. The extra government cheese is alike a massive bonus.

Funny you say that. I grew up during that transition, when I was younger they didn't do that, when I was older they did. I distinctly remember as a kid the first time that happened to me, I was confused and tried to give it back because I didn't place and thought they made a mistake. I told the guy that he had the wrong person, that it was for someone else and he replied something to the effect of, "oh, no it's yours for trying, good job". I took it and just kind of moved along at that point because I didn't know what to say, hey you can't blame an 11 year old for not having the right words at the time. I remember being annoyed by the whole thing - it made winning lose value, I thought to myself, "so if I win everyone else gets a prize too?". Participation awards didn't feel right to me as a kid then and as a parent they don't feel right now. They undermine one of the life lessons you can take from sports as a kid - life is a competition (for jobs, etc.) and how to handle wins and losses.

It's not good

I have been buying parts 12 months in advance and still see delays. Many are custom or from a single supplier in Germany. Blanket PO's with scheduled release helps. My vendors maintain stock of our common parts as well.

That's the biggest argument I've seen so far as to why people are refusing to work: "well then you should actually pay a living wage." Sorry folks, flipping burgers shouldn't pay a living wage. It's a high school pocket money job, not a career like people are turning it into.
