Has anyone ever bought a rifle/shotgun out of state at a gun show (or elsewhere) via a private sale? Obviously there is no paperwork involved in such a transaction, but is there anything illegal about bringing that firearm back to NY?
It is against federal law for residents of two different states to do a gun sale without an FFL involved. Nothing illegal about brining the gun back to NY as long as it is NY state legal.Has anyone ever bought a rifle/shotgun out of state at a gun show (or elsewhere) via a private sale? Only when one of the guns ends up in police hands then it is a felony for both buyer and seller.I see.......is there anyway for this to be enforced??

Circumstances matter: residents of the same state not a federal crime. Residents of different states = federal crime. My BIL can't hold on to a gun for more then a week. Some times he would buy a gun the next day later he would sell it or trade it for another gun in a couple of days repeat, a couple of more days later repeat.
Well he sold a handgun to some one who sold it to someone else and it was used in a robbery, a couple or hours after the robbery the state police was knocking at his door at 3am in the morning.
He didn't get any citation, but the hassle wasn't worth it.
He has been that way for close to twenty years. I stopped by a small local gun shop yesterday on the way home from work, he was there trying to trade a kimber 1911 off that he just picked up.
How exactly would they know? Are they that easily able to look up the serial number through the NICS system/FBI?My BIL can't hold on to a gun for more then a week.
