Buying handgun in another county??

I have my unrestricted pistol permit, and buy a lot of pistols locally here in Tioga County, always using the local sheriff dept.. I always thought I could only use the sheriff dept in the county I resided in..
However I can't seem to find anything in NY handgun law stating that.. I just might not be looking hard enough .. So here is the reason for me asking..
I want to go up to Cicero to buy a used/surplus pistol at Gander Mountain.. Its an 84 mile drive each way.. If I go up and purchase the gun, can I get it added to my permit at the Onondaga County Sheriff dept, or must the transfer and adding to permit process all be done in my home county??..

I have bought guns out of county before in NY, but did use the Tioga County Sheriff, because they are close by.. I hate to drive 168 miles round trip to look at and buy the gun, and then have to drive 168 miles the next day to pick it up after getting it added to my permit..
In that case i would have to buy it sight unseen, and have it shipped to a local FFL, but last time I did that, I wound up with a rust bucket that I kept because i didn't want to go through the hassle of returning it, and having to pay a 2nd transfer fee, second shipping fee etc...

Honestly I think I know the answer, but like I said, unless I am not looking in the right place, I can't see where it says anything about being forced to use your home county sheriff for any handgun purchase.. Any helpful info would be appreciated... bob

No way around having to visit the permit clerk at the PSB on Rt 38. They have to put the paperwork in your folder in her office, then she'll isue you your updated card.

Yeah kind of what I thought.. She's a good gal.. Always polite and helpful.. the Tioga county sheriff dept has been pretty good, and I consider myself lucky compared to the horror stories our friends in other counties upstate, on the island and city always share here..

One time a few years ago, I "lost" a gun for a few hours[ my wife put it into her pocketbook, thinking it was her own carry gun]. They aer very similar to each other.
The sheriffs I encountered, and the clerk were understanding about my upset, nd when I came back an hour or so later, they seemed genuinely happy for me, that it was just a mistake ad the gun was always with us, and they did not have to report it to the state as a lost weapon..
Just such a hassle being FORCED to buy the gun and have it shipped instead of going and buying it, and doing the transfer where the hell I bought it... bob

If Tioga will issue a coupon without a receipt that is all you would need but I suspect they don't work that way. Here in Cortland county we can get as many coupons as we wish, go pick up the handgun(s), then bring the receipt back and ad it to our permit.

Do you co-register\\ the weapons with your wife? We have each others pistols on our permit, my cousin and his dad co-own theirs too. Very convienant to not have to worry which pistol we want to carry.

Why not go there and buy the gun, then have them transfer it to your local FFL. I realize you'll have to pay the transfer fee at your local FFL, but it would save you from killing another day, and the cost of gas, etc. I can't think of any other way to do it.

This type of bullshit just adds validity to my decision to GTFOONYS!!

Because transfer plus shipping. Depends on how much gas costs. My two cents.

I've been lucky because all of mine have come from family via the FFL my father in law works at so all I've needed to pay was the NICS/transfer fee at my FFL and the 3 bucks or whatever to put on my permit.

Exactly.. Shipping costs are a killer... $35 transfer fee, then $25 to ship.. Adds an awful lot to a $279 gun... Plus I do have a really nice trade in, a barely fired Ruger Mark III Target .22LR, with box,, lock, decals, manual, and all original paperwork still in the box.

I might swing a deal with Mclains in Endicott.. They usually give me a reasonable deal on trades, fair value on guns I sell them etc.. I can trade /sell the Mark III to him, and have the Beretta shipped to him as part of the deal, maybe he won't bonk me over the head too bad with the FFL fee.. I dunno, I'll figure it out... thanks for the replies... bob

You need to use your home county to add the pistol. They are the agency that issued the permit and they have your file. See if the store will email you a bill of sale ahead of time so you can get it added before you go there.

I just went through this. I ended up buying a pistol sight unseen. If I had to make two trips, it would have killed the deal. Bought the pistol and the ffl emailed me the paperwork, added it to my permit and picked it up. What pistol r u looking at Cicero gander?

I wouldn't ask you to do that, but if you were going anyway, and its not a problem, sure that would be wonderful, and it would be well appreciated certainly... Even getting a good hands on look if they have one would be a great help actually.. Those guns may not be in every store of course.. its possible they are in one warehouse location, and then sent out as needed when they are purchased...
Any information you can dig up would be greatly appreciated!... bob

If they do not have the actual gun at the store, and it has to be shipped in after it is purchased, why not just order it online, and have it shipped to your local FFL? Either way it is a sight-unseen purchase, isn't it? Am I missing something here, other than you may be able to refuse the purchase after looking over the gun they ship to the store?

Some dealers give you a 3 day no fireing inspection time and a full refund (less shipping) if it doesn't match their description. Call them.
