cabinet and safe storage

Hey everyone, So I have a new dilemma that I'm sure one or three of you may have run into in the past. I am running out of storage space for my guns. I am currently using two Stack-On 8 gun capacity cabinets. The correct answer to all of this is to buy a new, better, larger safe...but that's not on my short list right now. Ive thought about taking my muzzleloader out and keeping it under the bed, but that only gets one space back. Hand guns arent so much of an issue, mostly long guns. Also I keep my ammo inside the second cabinet because we have small kids in the house I suppose I could figure out something for the ammo in the short term but the fact is I'm still about maxed out on space.

What are if any, ways to maybe utilize the interior space better? Right now everything is lined up as the manufacturer intended. Scoped rifles seemingly take up two spaces as they are somewhat canted to be able to fit inside the cabinet. I've searched the googles, and pinterest, and I havent found too much there.

Has anyone created any sort of secondary supports to handle overflow rifles? Or somehow mounted something to the inside of the door to hold a rifle?

I had a similar smaller safe and found that if I placed half muzzle up and half muzzle down, worked.for awhile but in the end it was big boy time.

I use a Craftsman roll-away tool cabinet for ammo, could use a few more too.

Re: roll aways- anyone have any suggestions on something cheap but decent along those lines? I have looked at Craftsman, Husky, and a few others but seems like everything remotely decent costs more than I want to spend right now or is bigger than I need (i have a particular space next to work/gun desk in mind so want something capacious and compact in footprint).

I emptied both cabinets and removed the shelf from one of them...I need to make a few "scope extension" cradles, the 3D printer will come in handy for that. With a little bit of design work, I figure I can make up something that can hold the BB guns on the inside of the door, and one of the scary ones can be hung from the cabinet ceiling via the stock using up some wasted space....A little bit of time and I'll free up some space. I think I'm going to get some cheap auto carpet from the lowes or walmart, line the sides and make a non slip bottom.

Thanks @Loworange88 . I need something a little less wide than that but will look thru Harbor, not sure why I didn't think of that. Main thing on my side is needs to be not too high, because it will sit next to my work desk in the basement/home office/gun room/man cave- need to keep that TV line of sight intact!

I do have a spot that could be retrofitted with a door and lock under the stairs...currently it’s where we keep left over floor tiles and things like that. I might have to go stare at it now. Thanks.

Be careful, ammo weight is more than most tools.. mine is Chuck full and the drawers are friggin stressed.

I have multiple Harbor Freight tool boxes that I actually use for tools. They've never given me an ounce of trouble. I'm not a pro and I just can't justify thousands for a Snap On box. They frequently come on sale and actually have a number of options from small and simple to hugantic.

but get creative with storage. My handguns are in places one wouldnt think.

So I don't think we are supposed to put ammo in something that can partially contain energy , Could cause an explotion in a fire.

I also thing in NY we now have a safe storage law for homes with children so if you did remove you rifle you may not be in compliance

I have a cheap safe and I made shelfs and installed these for my hand guns , I took all of my guns out of there case and store them in these containers in my safe

I’m going to be framing out the cubby under the stairs soon for the ammo cans, then I can get them out of my second cabinet. Then I’ll build a locking door in the cubby. So the rifles will all be in the locked cabinet, and the ammo locked in the cubby under the stairs.
