Sand has been an excellent bullet stop since the dawn of bullets. Not sure this is news.

When I was young and playing Army with my friends with our snow forts, I was puzzled, and remember distinctly my father telling me that snow would not stop bullets.
He then continued that you wanted logs and sandbags overhead for when the trees explode.

My kids love the stuff. But it makes a huge mess. So now they can either play with it on the back deck or in the basement.

This stuff is cool. It's one of those things you see/feel in real life and it just doesn't quite make sense. Because you're used to sand being dry but it's squishy.
